I think Newcastle to stay up / Mancs top4 are both decent shouts.

Nope, I think there's a figure that we'd accept (not sure what that figure is though). Of course then they have to persuade Tarks to join them when he could wait six months and get a chunk of that fee for himself. I'm also not convinced that he'd want to go to Newcastle when his stated aim is to move somewhere he'd have a better chance of getting picked for England, West Ham seems more likely from the player's point of view.

Agree that he's be a great signing for them.

Collins has looked well capable of replacing him in our team and early signs are that he could turn out just as good a player, if not better.

I suspect Newcastle will probably pay him significantly more than we will offer given the recent Saudi purchase and their desperation to avoid relegation. Given his age, I'd strongly consider taking the fat stack of cash if I were him.

Not sure I buy the "getting picked for England" line. He's a very good player who's right in the sweet spot for one last big payday. Wouldn't blame him for following that.

Newcastle will have to basically play like a top 4 team for the second half of the season to stay up. They won't get anyone amazing in January because they'll be a huge shout to go down.
If they don't beat Burnley this week, their matches before New Years are: @LC, @Pool, vs City, vs United @Everton.
They'll be lucky to get a point from that.
They could easily be 20 games in and at 7-10 points. Then you're looking at needing ~30 from the remaining 18.
Finding players who can come in, instantly gel and get that team ~8 wins, 6 draws and only losing 4 matches when they have 0 wins from 14?

If you instantly give them losses vs Chelsea, City and Pool...they can basically afford to lose ~1 more game after January. That's it! They're done. It's over.

Can they sign some good players? Sure, but they won't be anyone who would be thinking of playing in the CL come 2022.

Neither would I. I just don't see Newcastle as a particularly attractive move for him in January. It was nearly 18 months ago that he gave the interview saying he didn't want to stay beyond the end of his contract. He's waited this long, so why not give it another 6 months when he would be in a better position to make even more money? Unless Newcastle decide to make a really silly offer to him, I suppose, which is well within the realms of possibility.
