Arsenal need to pray they don't get deducted too many points, or they'll be playing this league from the Championship

The formation of the Super League comes at a time when the global pandemic has accelerated the instability in the existing European football economic model. Further, for a number of years, the Founding Clubs have had the objective of improving the quality and intensity of existing European competitions throughout each season, and of creating a format for top clubs and players to compete on a regular basis.

The pandemic has shown that a strategic vision and a sustainable commercial approach are required to enhance value and support for the benefit of the entire European football pyramid. In recent months extensive dialogue has taken place with football stakeholders regarding the future format of European competitions. The Founding Clubs believe the solutions proposed following these talks do not solve fundamental issues, including the need to provide higher-quality matches and additional financial resources for the overall football pyramid.

Leni would've delivered better visuals than their website, I'm sure.

Economic instability in European football = we're not guaranteed a place in the CL each year and that's unfair

The PL would lose billions without the big 6.

The courts couldn't even uphold the ban on City from playing in the CL when their financial doping was very, very clear. I dont see how they could ban clubs and win that battle in the courts.

This. Logged on after a busy day pretty much completely off the internet. wtf.

Florentino Perez is like a Bond villain, and I say that with respect (mostly).

It's insane that Madrid, who've won UEFA competitions more than anyone, just decided that they were bored like some kid who's played too many seasons on FIFA career mode. They're in the semi-finals and just said **** it, who cares.

Isn't it more "they're mad uefa wants to expand the CL and don't want to split TV money with the minnows?"

I need to read more about this ESL to grasp exactly what is happening (or at least is stated to be happening).

Anyone got any decent lengthy articles on it?

Tomorrow Uefa was set to release plans to revamp the CL. They planned to increase the number of teams to 36 and number of group matches to 10. The "big" clubs didn't like these changes.

Today, 12 clubs announced plans to form a competition to inherently replace the CL. They intend this not to have am effect on domestic leagues, but the leagues, in addition to FIFA and uefa, feel threatened by the change.

I think most of the "big clubs" problems with the CL as is are that in England/Italy, traditional powerhouse teams have missed out often lately. You also are then splitting the CL money with smaller teams from Eastern Europe and smaller leagues. Gatekeeping the competition gives each team substantially more money.

There is also a "diet coke" solution that ends up with pretty much the same format for domestic leagues and Champions League that runs now, but instead of the UCL being run by UEFA/FIFA its run by an organisation run by the clubs, which includes a bunch of stuff that has already happened or is in the pipeline (with extra spots for the bigger leagues and some safety nets for big clubs to have **** years and still make the UCL).

I think that solution (UEFA no longer controlling the UCL, but the UCL for the most part keeping its shape) is a reasonable shot to happen.

I think there is zero shot that the English clubs get relegated/banned from the Premier League. The vast majority of the interest internationally is tied to the City vs Liverpool matches, not Burnley vs Southampton (no offence to fans of those clubs).

I look forward to the Athletic writeups the next few days thats for sure.

So... it looks like this is happening.

Perez is chairman, Joe Glazer vice. Agnelli Has resigned from his UEFA rolls.

All 6 English clubs supporter groups have said they are disgusted.

Not really sure now how this plays out.

Wonder who the 3 un named clubs are? Bayern, BvB and PSG? Curious if they’ll turn it down now due to the backlash which would be amazing if they did.

So this brings the US model into the picture. It was coming sooner rather than later.

Pretty sure UEFA just shat their pants. GL selling your product when 80% of your games are Ludogorets-Ferencvaros and the big boys arent joining.

Tbh I still thought that this was a bluff, but reading the articles today, there is seemingly serious traction behind it. Maybe that is why it is such a great bluff?

In unrelated news I see GNev still wants to get the title back from Liverpool, god bless his soul.

Bayern, PSG publicly opposed it, but if its happening then who knows?

Wonder if years of UEFA being weak handed with bans over rule breaking has slowly led to this at least to some extent? So the billionaire investors are aware that they are all bark no bite due to commercial implications of not involving said clubs for a couple of seasons.

PSG is a lock, but I think its possible the German teams aren't involved yet because of their rules in regards to ownership (50+1).

If Germany is in, I would guess that it is Leipzig ahead of BVB.

the league would lose a lot too with no attractive european places to play for. they have to fight this pretty hard

and some of these clubs like chelsea and city are not that big historically. and their appeal mostly built on domestic achievements. the interest in them could be replicated. losing united, liverpool and arsenal would be crushing obviously but you could play hardball and suspend them a few years maybe if you really had to force the issue
