Yeah, it's kind of disappointing that he hasn't even made the matchday squad in either game. I just don't see how he could do any worse than what Lingard/Mata offered tonight, even if he is 5'3 and a 100 pounds soaking wet.

can someone here explain to me why McTominay doesn't get more playing time and a more prominent role when he's on the field.

I only follow for DFS purposes, but when I watch the matches and he's on the field, he always seems to be one of the main difference makers out there but then the next game he's back on the bench.

Either I'm fooling myself via sample size, poor judgement or he really should be out there more often.

also could never understand why so many players are rested so often. I get how there will be times when you make some minor changes or have a platoon based on the matchup, but you often find the best players benched for what I can only assume is load management

In a perfect world, McTominay is playing for Newcastle or a team in the lower half of the table. He’s good enough to play in the top flight (but shouldn’t be starting for a team that plans on consistently playing in Europe and one that has CL ambitions) and can clean up loose balls, be a problem for defenses, etc. Personally, I refer to him as Scottish Fellaini to friends and it seems fairly apropos.

So, a more B2B role would probably play better. Especially as that would move United’s best outfield player into a more attacking position to fully take advantage of said player’s gifts.

McTominay is better than that, but I don't really get the he doesn't play enough argument, he's going to play a lot
