for a start i think its right to have an incentive for finishing higher, just as a matter of principle
there might be some perverse incentives with a completely flat payout structure. could find key players at mid table teams getting rested a lot at the back end of a season to make sure they're ready for next year ie when the games start mattering again. might sound implausible on the face of it, but fa cup and mickey mouse XIs indicate that the bottom line is at the forefront of selection decisions. if you cant get into europe and you cant get relegated then why risk your key assets? play the kids, it'll be good for their development
also the flat structure removes a disincentive for the following plan: newly promoted team invests 0 money, sells the players that got them promoted, goes back down after collecting 6 points on the season. fans are furious, chairman doesn't care cos he's got same payout as man utd got plus upcoming parachute payments in his back pocket. reckon there's plenty of ashley/oyston types out there who would be well up for this
