Sorry it's not a GIF. I hope Henry will be a better assistant than a pundit

I could probably name a bunch of german strikers that are better than 2016 Rooney. 2010, maybe not

There's about a thousand german (and English) central midfielders better than 2016 Rooney

Name them then. There are not thousands of midfielders, not even hundreds, in the world better than Rooney, nevermore in Germany. As much as he has fallen from peak that is still ridiculous. His selection is not at all ridiculous and that might be an indictment of English talent in the position but Rooney is still a decent footballer and would start for almost any team in the league.

Put it this way, Schweinsteiger got into the German Euro squad, 2016 Rooney is better than him.

Cmon, it's clearly hyperbole. But making Rooney a certain starter is ridiculous since even Henderson is a better CM. Rooney is just not a CM, all he does is play long passes to the flanks.

GAMEWEEK 3
Tottenham 1 – 1 Liverpool
Saturday August 27th 7:30am
Wolff’s Biergarten Albany, NY
Quote:
For a team that talks about their intent on being fitter than anyone else in the league, Liverpool have looked anything but in the first 3 games of the season. After bossing much of the game for the first 60 minutes, the team faded significantly for the next 20 or so with the Tottenham equalizer coming as the punishment in the 72nd minute.

To be fair Liverpool too were gifted a penalty. By the letter of the law it was a penalty but it was an accidental trip by Lamela on Firmino on the very edge of the penalty box in a non-threatening position. I’d be irate had that gone against us though I understand it is the correct call. We did enough to score from the run of play and have to take our chances better going forward.

There were plenty of positives to take from this one though. Sadio Mane being back in the team made all the difference in the world. Even with him not at his best it makes the rest of the team so much better and more fluid. We dominated large portions of the game against the 3rd place team from last season away from home. We created plenty of chances coming off a game where we did not create one. If Lallana holds his run a split second and stays onside the game is 2-0 and we’re out of sight. Still frustrating to not walk away with 3 points.

The Players
MOTM – Joel Matip. Outstanding debut from the centerback. He and Lovren kept Harry Kane completely silent and he was excellent in the air. Unlucky not to score as well and looks a threat on set pieces, something we haven’t had in years.

Honorable Mentions

James Milner - Very solid job at LB to further contribute to our defense. It seemed the Spurs plan was to attack down his side of the field, like every other team has done when Moreno plays there, but without the success of attacking Moreno. Much improved on his Burnley performance and against attack minded teams he is the choice at LB. Still hope there is a signing on the cards though.

Jordan Henderson – Looked almost like a natural CDM today. His passing was much better and he rarely found himself in the attacking final third. His positioning was much improved, and he broke up quite a few plays and played a sensible ball to trigger an attack. Most importantly he was disciplined and played the role of protecting the back four well. Good to see and hope it continues

Simon Mignolet – Did well to make a few key saves and Tottenham were on the front foot. They did get their goal eventually, but Mignolet kept us in it when our goal was under siege. His passing wasn’t noticeably awful which these days is a positive

Not So Honorable Mentions

Nathaniel Clyne – One of our most consistent players has looked anything but this season. The right side seems more vulnerable than it was last season, but most concerning is his passing. He has given away far too many balls on what should be very simple passes. Most of these have led directly to scoring chances by the opposition of the very least them recovering possession in our third with much of our midfield pushed up the field

Phillipe Coutinho – Missed what should rightly be called a sitter in the first half when he was played in beautifully by Coutinho from about 6 yards out. Vorm did well to save it, but someone of Coutinho’s class has to score there. Doesn’t seem fully match fit yet. He was the midfield holding up play on our out balls which was a little bit concerning but he did at least do that well. That’s not what we should be grading Coutinho on though. Hasn’t impacted either of the last 2 games.

Georginio Wijnaldum – It’s looking more and more like we’ve paid 25m for a 25m CAM rather than a 25m CM. He’s clearly at his best and most comfortable when he is in an extremely advanced attacking position and has been on the end of some of our better moves. But for most the game and most of his time in a Liverpool shirt he has been invisible in the midfield and his forward runs can lead our midfield tremendously exposed. Luckily today Henderson covered for much of it, but it’s playing with fire. Don’t see him winning much of the ball or creating anything from the deeper central midfield position

Lallana actually covered the most distance of any player in the league this season in that game. Also Danny Rose commented on Mane being the hardest opponent he'd faced.

He wasn't bad. He is just so so frustrating in the final 3rd though. He's not a bad player by any means I just think he can so easily be upgraded
