They might start benefiting from scoring on their third and fourth shots on target.

This reliance and obsession with stats is quite laughable. All these projections and predictions are a joke. They mean nothing. These ridiculous graphs will be rolled out until the last game of the season. By definition, they will slowly morph into the final table, which will be very different from how it is now.

Sure, Chelsea have had a bad start, but we all know that the top 4 will be the same at the end of the season. Everyone else is battling to avoid/reach the Europa League.

You can bleat on about percentages of completed passes by a left footer in a 4pm kick off on a Sunday after an international break all you like, but it means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

This is ridiculous. The only league game Spurs have been outplayed in this season is the Sunderland one - if that. Our Townsends and N'Jies aren't any worse than Leicester or Spam starters. We'll **** up in the usual way by never winning the late weekend games that see us actually push on into top 4 places thank you very much.

What? I was talking about wet spam. I said I think spurs are a good spot for top 4.

Just because it's football doesn't mean stats are irrelevant. Stats would have probably prevented **** like Cisse and that other loon to LFC after the WC.

Stats would've meant Bale would've been loaned/given to a Championship team in 2009.

yeah, definitely

stats can be really useful though, for example we all know tim sherwood is a better manager than mauricio pochettino but its very difficult to put forward that opinion at the moment given recent results and the recency bias of most people. this is a place where statistical analysis can be effectively employed - we can point out that sherwood has a significantly better managerial win% than poch (both lifetime overall and with spurs specifically) which should win the argument if the other person is reasonable.

Pete - what are your thoughts on trusting your reads and spotting tells at the poker table vs HUD usage?

Do you need those VR goggles to throw up a HUD when playing at Empire Casino?

This resistence and neglect of stats is quite laughable. All these guys just ignoring stats all the time and flame on anybody who uses them whilst not realising that majority (or a lot) of those inside the football world use them makes you a joke. Fat Sam would be nothing without his stats.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Let the stat guys stat ffs. You go too far never using them it appears (or only when you want to), other people go too far using only stats. For those in the middle its pretty cool to see different arguments put forward from both sides

Lots of people put too much trust in them without actually understanding them, but love to quote them to justify their decisions whether they are right or wrong ones.

I'm 1 for 1 with girls from Guildford. Stats win every time.

Mysteriously, Wenger also started competing again when he signed Oezil and Sanchez. If only one had, say, a theorem to explain such a phenomenon.

Roger Schmidt, though, is legit. Absolute boss.

I won't comment on N'Jie as I would walk past him in the street and not know who he is. However Townsend is inferior to our preferred starters in his position, unless he has become a footballer and I haven't noticed.

Look at the stats - we have lost one match against Man U at old Trafford in a match where we were the better team and the only goal was an own goal. We've beaten Man City 4-1, our other rivals are Chelsea (lol) plop (lol) Arsenal and United (lol). Going by xG we're the 3rd best team in the league and Spurs have been very unlucky in other matches.

I would be gutted if Spurs didn't finish in the top 4 this season, as IMO we're clearly the 3rd best team in the league, and with a bit of fortune and misfortune to our rivals, we could challenge.
WRT Kane, if he failed to score all season, there would still be an argument to keep him in the team given how hard he works, and the space he makes for the 3 behind him, who are all 10-a-season candidates.

Spurs. Our season will be another we look back on wistfully (or angrily) when Levy fails to bring in a striker again in January, but with Man Utd and Plop in transition and Chelsea regression I don't see how we're going to have a better chance of top 4.

Speaking of Dier, I know I'm high on him, but I don't think you can underestimate how his leadership qualities have helped Spurs push on this season. Something we really lacked last season. It's kinda funny how stressed all Spurs fans at the start of the season about bringing in a CM/DM as we had no cover for Mason and Bentaleb, and now I don't see how either get back in the team.

Considering how WOAT all other English CB's are, Dier/Stones should starters for England.

Hot take: Future England captain.
