I don't care how plus EV it is (and if it is plus EV to go out of the cup, why does the club enter it in the first place?), it's just wrong to root against your team.
I can maybe think of one situation where it might be acceptable and that's if by losing you stop your biggest rival (and I'm talking Arsenal/Spurs, Rangers/Celtic, Liverpool/Everton, Burnley/Venkys type rivalry) from winning the league. Even then I don't think I'd be comfortable with it.
Couldn't agree more.
It comes across as wanting Rodgers out for the sake of wanting Rodgers out. You get the impression it would be a disaster for him if Rodgers took Liverpool on a 10 match winning streak, cos then his job is safe. And not winning the league a couple of seasons was dodging a bullet because then Gerrard would have stayed around longer and Rodgers would be unsackable. A supporter surely wants their team to win every single game in every single competition, even though they know it is never going to be possible. If you think the manager is not up to the task then go ahead and vocalise that but meanwhile support your club, cos if your current manager can turn it around isn't that just as good?
Besides, the calculation that a cup defeat is better for Liverpool is based on some pretty dubious assumptions indeed IMO:
1. The relative lack of value of the cup versus league. Liverpool of all teams ought to value the cups higher than most, as they are unlikely to win any other honours and actually have a somewhat realistic chance of doing well.
2. If Liverpool sack Rodgers, they will be better off.
3. If Liverpool go out of cup, Rodgers' sack equity increases.
4. If Liverpool go out of cup, Liverpool's PL pts equity increases (independent on Rodgers being at the helm).
