Go to HR and see what they say because that's what they are there for.

yeah sorry to tell you this marty but Kev is right, as long as they've given you sufficient notice (ie 2 weeks' notice for a two week holiday) and have a decent reason (too many other employees already booked it is a fair reason, as is it being a busy time of year) there's nothing down for you.

Basically you need to raise the issue with your manager as a first step. As a calm and rational individual you will almost certainly take all this in your stride and handle it with a delicate touch.
