"Changing a manager during a crisis in the season does improve the results in the short term," he says. "But this is a misleading statistic because not changing the manager would have had the same result."

alternatively if your audience is not impressed by anecdote then i suggest pointing out the effect that managerial changes have on der markt.

for a recent example i suggest looking at newcastle's betfair odds vs leicester a few days before and a few days after champions league winner and 2015/16 real madrid manager fsw replaced wally with brolly, and also their relegation odds over that span. (if you're struggling to identify any movement whatsoever it's because there wasn't any)

Recent bias much? At the beginning of the season LOL Utd went to the top of the league when Carrick went back into the team.

Excellent Baids

However, just for balance:

The Performance of Football Club Managers: Skill or Luck?

I'm kind of on the fence wrt managers. I think 90% of the field can be replaced with no discernible difference to results, hence why when you treat them as a homogeneous group (as in the study above) then there is little/no variation in performance as a group.

However there are 5% at the top and bottom (basically, outliers) who are truly elite in affecting their teams performance.

Spoiler:

Therefore, chairman are probably correct in chopping managers every 18 months when their current manager turns out to be no better than the last. The next one will probably be no worse, and there is always the chance you will trip over one of the elite ones.

Assuming the duds are pretty easy to avoid.

Big fan of Carrick but he's been poor/injured for much of this season and he's almost 35, I don't think it's unfair to say he's on his last legs now. In fairness, LOLvG hasn't really done him any favours either by always pairing him with Felony or BFS.
