you're thinking of a situation where the goal keeper is still in goal, if that was the last defender making the tackle it wouldn't be a red

City gets Chelsea next week. Thanks Courtois

Lol these announcers trying to drum up support that that was a bad red.

That's not the rule though. There's no hard and fast rule, but I was always taught that a player moving the ball to the side isn't heading at goal, so it's not a direct goal scoring opp.

There's no rule where a GK fouling is an auto red
08-08-2015 , 01:54 PM
If the goalie taking out a man on a breakaway sidestepping him isn't a red then lol the rule.

Right, don't think I've paid that much attention throughout the game anyways

That's just lazy. That was such poor defense by Chelsea.

As I understand it, it's preventing a clear goal scoring opportunity. .

Being through on goal with the keeper lying on the floor behind you, even if a little wide, is still a clear goal scoring opportunity in my book..
08-08-2015 , 01:59 PM
bald stevie p doing what he wants. we should throw 25m at swansea for him.
08-08-2015 , 01:59 PM
I think the people being upset and loling at the ref would be much louder if it wasn't called a red than as it was
08-08-2015 , 01:59 PM
Wouldn't surprise me if the slow mos after the game deem it a non red but would be harsh to blame Oliver in real time

The rule isn't simply a clear goal scoring opportunity:

Quote:
If a player denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick (direct or indirect) or a penalty kick
I was always taught that it made playing the ball to the side not a red.
