In 2006, we had home advantage (and this is legitimately massive) and lost in the semis... England lost in the quarters on pens.

Then when you start looking at EUROs in 2000 and 2004, waters become even more muddy.

I don't want to discount mental factors entirely- if Germany and England ever face each other in an important penalty shootout again, I do think we'd have an advantage just because of what is on english players' minds. But I also think you could make lots of Sklansky bucks from average fans who think germany is 75+% in that spot.
2006 Germany had a strong team. Lahm and Schweini were breaking through. Eriksson didn't choose enough strikers for the 23-man squad so I think that was their weak point. I agree about the late 90s through 2004 England was stronger. That's actually when Germany started doing serious work changing their youth system, and in 2014 it finally paid off.

I wasn't admitting I was wrong, just that maybe we were both right.

Pretty certain England are not a unique case - DUCY?

not sure, but it should be fairly easy to work out given:
- plop and city are still in europe which take up at least two/three midweeks respectively
- can't rearrange either for the cup weekend as city/norwich was scheduled for that weekend anyway, and everton are still in
- can't play in the international break

wait, checking on the cup, are they really playing arse/hull v watford four days after the replay from the previous round? that's really quite short notice

I think their only other option would've been to replay Arse/Hull on the day of the next round. As is, UEFA is fining FA for playng cup games on the day of Champions League.

Random quiz question: How many World Cups has Walcott been chosen to and how many minutes has he played of World Cup football?

Last edited by raheem; 02-29-2016 at 04:33 PM. Reason: prolly super easy but whatever. no google

I don't think Walcott was taken to the 2010 World Cup because he was injured during the previous season and also Lennon's form.
02-29-2016 , 04:49 PM
never played at a world cup has he, always been injured or 9 years old
02-29-2016 , 04:53 PM
England have zero chance because of Hodgson, he's not the worst manager but he's not elite, nowhere near.

He said the other week Rooney will play for England, he's our most important player at the Euros, it's depressing. Any forward thinking manager wouldn't even include him in the squad.

It's going to make me cry seeing that England lineup with Rooney up top on his own and Kane/Vardy on the bench. Hodgson is going to think he's so clever leaving Vardy on the bench, bring him on the last 20 when the defenders are tired and we can use his pace!!

But instead, the other team will be defending deep 1-0 up, his pace will be useless at this point and we go out and Hodgson will be dumbfounded as to what went wrong.

That performance by England in one of the weakest ever groups at a World Cup, if not THE weakest in my lifetime was criminal.

The decision to play Gerrard in a 2 man midfield after he must have been exhausted from the big Liverpool season and gutted about his slip, it was an unforgivable decision.
02-29-2016 , 04:55 PM
Yeah I mean correct answer is 1 World Cup squad Walcott has been included to and has played 0 minutes.

2006 he was included at 17yo cos Eriksson made a blunder selecting him instead of a striker.

2010 he was not included, which Capello admitted later he made a mistake.

2014 long-term injury which kept him out.
