is momentum an exclusively foot-based phenomenon
Because there are studies in the same sport that hot-hand was disproved, that suggest momentum does exist.

I agree. However as we have previously found ITT, momentum is not easy to measure and best-case has a small (but significant) effect on performance. There are far easier "wins" for a sports scientist to investigate and get published, hence why the subject has perhaps received little empirical attention.

I'm guessing none of you have piled into the 1.26 on Utd tonight then?

Is Memphis Depay trying to kick the ball completeley out of that little stadium?

Crowd noise is the second most occurring phenomenon during momentum.

well, since momentum can be used to explain all possible results, then surely it must be a real thing.

I got "On Fire" in the 90s so often playing NBA Jam. The announcer even screamed it at the top of hist lungs. Every time he did that, I was immediately able to score "From Downtonwn." Momentum does exist.

Can anyone suggest any rivers for tonight? My canoe has sprung a leak and I need to take it elsewhere.

There is a line of commentary in PES 4*: "They have the momentum now"

QED

*or 5 I'm not sure, could even be 6. One of the good ones.

I can't seem to access the article without paying so I'm just going off the abstract.

Quote:
The perceptions of momentum in basketball games by a basketball-experienced, momentum-educated, trained observer were investigated. The observer attended 11 college and 3 high school basketball games thereby recording 50 instances of perceived momentum. The trained observer indicated on a momentum chart the particular game events that began, sustained, and ended each momentum period. The results indicated that the beginning of momentum was most often characterized as a combination of good performance by one team and poor performance by the opposing team. The five most frequently occurring actions at the beginning of perceived momentum in rank order were a 3-point shot, defensive stop, steal, fastbreak, or a turnover. During momentum, the five most frequently (in rank order) occurring actions were turnovers, crowd noise, defensive stops, steals, and "string" of unanswered points. The five actions most frequently observed (in rank order) at the end of momentum were turnovers by momentum team, missed shots by momentum team, time outs, fouls, and end of the playing period. The number of points scored by each team during a time of perceived momentum was analyzed. The momentum team scored significantly more points than the opposing team, but scored only five more points than the opposing team.
I've read this sentence about 5 times and can't seem to make sense of it. Am I being thick?

if scoring points gives you momentum then it seems like the team that scored the most had the most momentum.

Thread has lost its momentum

Oh for those watching, I went to school with this Knight-Percival guy. Nice fella iirc.

Depay finally puts one on target and Martial gets in the way

I'm in the momentum exists camp. It's a big thing in Chilean football, you see it less of top flight English football because the players are mentally stronger but if they are not it can be a pretty big deal.

For what it's worth, as one of the original antagonisers in this debate, I have never (nor do I think anyone else has either) advocated that momentum does not exist. I just think it's an absurd thing to use as an explanation and people are just randomly connecting dots.
