1) In the NFL, when a team has already defeated another team twice, then plays them in the playoffs, you will ALWAYS here people/announcers state that "it is tough to beat a team three times in a row".

2) The over analysis of the Ryder Cup captain in golf, and of the Ryder Cup analysis, and Ryder Cup, itself. This is just absurd, since a twelve year old kid could be the captain and have a reasonable chance to win (any kid of any age). More energy is wasted on the Ryder Cup than almost anything else in sport, when factoring in the true importance of it to the fans.

3) Ted Williams quote that won't die: Williams once said, "Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in all of sports.". This is just wrong on all levels, and one of the worst quotes/saying in sports history. Totally meaningless nonsense.

4) NFL. The extra point. Yeah.....miraculously, this has been fixed. Went from 99 percent to 94 percent, and this is a huge change, and removed one of the most useless plays in all of sports history (only downside is that the fans have to be quicker to the restroom and back).

You would be surprised how good this thread could get, if you guys would let it roll a bit without insulting me for putting it up. There was once a thread about Donald Trump being president.....Zero Point Zero chance and laughing. The Bitcoin thread started at 70 cents per Bitcoin, and the guy got laughed at.

Trust me, once this is in your head, you will start noticing things, especially with the NFL starting, and all of the issues, bad ideas, bad announcers, etc. that you will be hammered with non stop for about 7 months. I'm talking about people saying things in sports that are totally nonsense, and wastes of plays like the NFL extra point once was. I mean, that was 5 or 6 plays per game for decades that were a total waste of time and energy, and caused injuries....for an essentially automatic play (99 percent in recent years). In baseball they finally did away with making the pitcher throw four pitches on an intentional walk, as well. Now they just send the guy to first.

This thread has a chance if you let it develop.

Here's one: Christian Hackenberg. The guy physically looks like a quarterback (so the scouts and GM's say). but is just horrific, and always has been horrific. Essentially no true quarterback skills, yet has been given a ton of chances to have said skills magically appear.

Another one would be Mel Kiper. Adds no actionable insight ever...to anyone. You can say that about most talking heads, but Mel Kiper is lauded as being an expert, yet he cannot offer any expertise or insight that anyone can use (that another talking head, not specifically known for being an expert, couldn't add).

Mel has world class hair, and as he ages looks like a character in "Team America World Police" Those two things alone should get him a pass....

You're right about Hackenberg, tho

Yeah, I actually enjoy the whole Mel Kiper thing. It is all ridiculous, but rather enjoyable with the hair, and his excitement, etc.. An example of things that are wrong, and this is not sports related, but gives you an idea of a bad idea or understanding that gets repeated over and over again. There is a big trend in calling anybody who dresses up as a black person for any reason, as "racist Blackface". But that isn't the case. Traditional Blackface is an exaggeration of facial features, with the point being to mock and belittle black people.

I even saw a few years ago where people were trashing Billy Crystal because years earlier he used to do Sammy Davis Jr impressions at the Oscars. This is the type of stuff I am looking for. The Billy Crystal example is so absurd, as are the vast majority of cases that the media, or social media, labels Blackface.

Perhaps it is just stupid to post about things that anyone in a sports forum already knows are stupid...

For this thread to have hope you needed some "novel" stupid, not "stock" stupid..

Well then add some insights. I never heard anyone talk about the stupid Ted Williams quote, yet baseball announcers repeat it all the time. And the Ryder Cup analysis is a huge choke. I'm cool with letting the thread die a quick death if nobody has any insights. If it must die, let it.

What would be your "hardest thing to do in sports?" . For me it would be playing quarterback successfully in the NFL.

That or stopping LeBron from getting to the rim

I mean, that's a whole skill level....not one particular thing, like hitting a baseball.

What do you think the hardest thing to do in sports would be for the average Joe? Hitting a baseball from a Major League pitcher has to be up there.

doing anything vs a professional athlete is pretty much impossible for an average person, but hitting a baseball is probably one of the easier ones actually. assuming he's throwing ~strikes, you could swing wildly and maybe get lucky. can't say the same for much else in sports.

You are sharp. I had a feeling someone would bring that up. Haha. I still by all of the Ryder Cup comments. Heck, that might help the argument. Could a child have pissed off the players any worse?

That is why the saying is so bad about hitting a baseball. It lacks any context at all, and every person on earth can do it "to a certain degree". It is one of the most nonsensical things about sports ever said (that has been picked up by announcers, writers, the public, etc.) It fails from the start.

I don't think Ted Williams was talking about it in that context, but even if he was, the saying is stupid and fails. What did he even mean when he said that? If he is talking about major league players, then they all "hit it" a certain percentage of the time. Almost all get "hits" 25 percent of the time, and the greatest players only get hits a little over 30 percent of the time.

If he was talking about an average Joe hitting a major league pitcher, then it wouldn't even make sense. Like someone said, might as well say stopping Lebron James (or Kareem or Wilt) from getting to the rim would be the hardest thing in sports. It is just a dumb statement, and somehow, someway gets thrown around all the time. I don't think Ted Williams put a lot of thought into it, but it has stuck around, and because it has stuck around, it is one of the dumbest things said in sports.
