It all goes back to the 2019 Wimbledon final, for me. Fed nearly pulled it out, but couldn't. If he had won that, you could have held tried to hold the argument until the end of time. Federer's mini renaissance in his mid thirties looked to have tilted the conversation, but Novak has clearly done more in the same age range.
As is, Novak is clearly the greatest tennis player to ever walk the earth and, as a ~40 year old, it is unlikely I ever see a better one before I die.
Which is clearly a pretty unfortunate reality to live in given his personal qualities, but it is what it is nonetheless.
The interesting question is going to be whether future players can have this level of productivity late into their thirties that the 'big three' have managed. I have my doubts on this. It appears players can hold up much better now physically than they could a quarter century ago, but it remains to be seen whether players will
want this as they age.
