Oh no, what if you turn over the ball on downs? They kneel it anyway?
I went crazy before it happened because I knew it would happen. How does this one happen.

Which is why Giants should not have tried to catch the ball. Wait for him to punt, then walk off the field.

yeah that was clearly a 'my guys could get hurt, i have no chance of winning, let's punt' situation.

Yep, letting Ross field that punt was at least as dumb, if not dumber. You can at least think of plausible reasons for punting.

Well, unless you're worried about a miracle punt down to the one.

The Pats coaches must be laughing their asses off at all the stupid coaches in the league.

As DCIAce pointed out in the MNF thread, if that's the reasoning, send all your backups on and try a Hail Mary.

That's the sad thing. They do have a chance of winning (however remote), but they also would have an even better chance if Spags hadn't been so punt-happy all game. I mean the Rams went into the 4th quarter down 28-16 and all three of their possessions ended in a punt.

but that's totally ridiculous. so you're going to have that play called in advance? you have to get all the guys out there and lined up correctly.

i mean the punt is pretty lol but the rams' % of winning had to be way less than 1% at that point

like nath said, there was a way worse punt, i've forgotten the situation, but it was very bad, like 4th and 3 on the rams' 40, something like that

Lol. They should've assumed the giants were smart enough not to even field the kick to not allow that to happen.

Spags is an idiot, but here's another person that shared the same logic as him that doesnt make any sense.

It would seem the +EV play is to assume the opposing coaches are not smart enough to figure that out in time.

Yeah in terms of difference in EV that is orders of magnitude worse, but there's something very stark about seeing a coach opt for a 0% win chance over a non-zero alternative.

Yeah, in the last two primetime games we've had a coach choose a >0% chance of losing over a 0% chance of losing and a 0% chance of winning over a >0% chance of winning.

punting there is like bunting all 3 batters in the bottom of the 9th because you are down by 8

Regarding the end of the game punt, maybe they just don't care about relinquishing their tiny chance of winning. The mindset is "we lost, let's move on". I have to think even NFL coaches understand (or could have it explained to them) that a punt there does not give you your theoretical best chance of winning.

It's like resigning in a chess game. If you are one move away from being checkmated in a chess tournament, you can always take up the rest of your thinking time and hope that your opponent drops dead or has a family emergency and has to leave or something. Has to be a nonzero chance.

I'm not advocating the above line of reasoning by the way, I'm just proposing explanations for observed behavior.

yeah i think that's pretty close to the way they're thinking. teams punt all the time down 4 scores with like 5 minutes to go.

Yeah but coming back from four scores is a hugely different animal than two scores.

I think once I saw Jimmy Johnson's Dolphins kneel down the ball down like 3 scores with 3 minutes left and then turn it over to the other team who did the same to end the game.

i don't know what was more stupid

punting into a guaranteed loss

or the giants fielding the punt when they had a guaranteed win if they didn't attempt to field the punt

jesus ****ing christ these people are worse than 1960's baseball GMs

kyle,
Brett Lawrie bunted in the bottom of the 10th with the game winning run in scoring position. Baseball and football GMs have gotten a lot smarter, it's the coaches that have yet to embrace math.

Was it 1st and 2nd with nobody out? I could see that being right sometimes (mostly with a good bunter who's a poor hitter and a big double play possibility).
