It's funny that for like 10 years there was no penalty whatsoever for throwing a challenge flag, and coaches would always ******edly throw them, have the ref come over, slow down the game, etc. The NFL goes from that to lowering the boom big time.

This is why I don't feel that bad about it. The abuse of using challenge flags in the past just to pause the game and get a conversation in with the refs was ridiculous.

But how would this work in practice? What if the other coach made some "plausible" argument he was like challenging the clock or something, wanted more time on there. How do you know what "benefits" the challenging team until you've reviewed it....which you cant do?

Mike Leach today. Has 4th and 1.5 yards to go from the UW 27 down by 3 with 2:00 left and opts to kick, even though his kicker's obviously less likely to make it then his offense is to convert, and if you do make the kick, you guarantee that UW gets the last possession needing only a FG to win whereas if you keep driving, there's a pretty good chance UW doesn't have time to answer back. Rough estimates in my head say WSU's 10% to win if they kick and 25% if they would have gone for it.

to be fair, the wind made a FG impossible, and also made passing very difficult and it was 4th and 13. It was a bad play, but not nearly the worst coaching gaffe of the day. Not even top 5 worst of the day.
