This is why I don't feel that bad about it. The abuse of using challenge flags in the past just to pause the game and get a conversation in with the refs was ridiculous.

Atlanta Falcons did this last week. Mike Smith may or may not be the next Belicheck, but he's certainly not the next Chilly either.

ok, so him going into a blind rage and tossing the red flag emotion side, wtf is he doing settling for a 40 yard plus field goal on third down , i bb the only coach who does play actions here instead of just giving it to the rb for a straight up the gut ?

lol punting from the 31. That should be both a fireable and arrestable offense.

Who else is willing to pitch in some money for the 'hire John L. Smith and we'll pay his salary' fund?

Like, Akron plays games on TV every Tuesday night. John L. could convert that into must see tv.

But how would this work in practice? What if the other coach made some "plausible" argument he was like challenging the clock or something, wanted more time on there. How do you know what "benefits" the challenging team until you've reviewed it....which you cant do?

Yeah, because when some dumbass DL gets super pissed in the moment and throws a haymaker, costing his team 15 yards in a crucial spot, the media is usually all "Oh well, these things happen, heat of the moment!"

Mike Leach today. Has 4th and 1.5 yards to go from the UW 27 down by 3 with 2:00 left and opts to kick, even though his kicker's obviously less likely to make it then his offense is to convert, and if you do make the kick, you guarantee that UW gets the last possession needing only a FG to win whereas if you keep driving, there's a pretty good chance UW doesn't have time to answer back. Rough estimates in my head say WSU's 10% to win if they kick and 25% if they would have gone for it.

yes, it's obviously stupid when down 3 to kick a FG with 2:00 left in the game.

lol iggy

to be fair, the wind made a FG impossible, and also made passing very difficult and it was 4th and 13. It was a bad play, but not nearly the worst coaching gaffe of the day. Not even top 5 worst of the day.

Skip Holtz just scored a TD to go down 18 with less than 8 minutes left. Kicked the XP, seemingly without even thinking about going for 2.

I watched part of this game and while the wind was terrible, even a run play is probably more +EV than a punt. You might be right about it not being top 5 worst of the day, though.

Worst for me was the Arky FG attempt instead of going for it inside the one.

Well the other coach wouldn't get to challenge a non-reviewable play either...so it's at the discretion of the review operator what aspect of the play they would review. Also they could review the clock without reviewing the actual play, like, they don't have to review every aspect of a play. As far as situations where its unclear who benefits (such as an intentionally letting them score scenario where its unclear if the guy scored) the rule is unclear, idk what to tell you.
