He said Friday that his first reaction was to go for it.

"We have a network and the numbers were being calculated," McCarthy said. "Three-and-out there, I think, puts us right about the 2-minute [mark]. ... I have great confidence in our 2-minute offense, especially with Aaron. That's the decision we made. It's a solid decision.

"Being an offensive coach, particularly early in my career, I had to develop a sense of operating more on the team mode, because my natural reaction, especially earlier, was always just to go for it. That's the inside look at exactly what went on there. You could see at one point I started to walk to the referee because I was going to call the timeout and just make sure we were set, because I already had the play that I wanted. But we talked it over game management-wise, and that's the decision I made."

So he considered going for it and almost called the final timeout there on 4th and 2 with a stopped clock, just to make sure they were set.

Such fish logic when combined with them not risking the timeout on that questionable catch when they had the lead in game.

I'm not even going to get into his belief in his two minute offense if they get a three and out and ignoring that one first down from Pete Carroll's team and they lose the game. That should be even more obvious and a good coach like Carroll will be alot more aggressive trying to get it realizing that fact and not wanting to punt the ball back to Rodgers.

Every time that FAT MIKE talks about this decision it just sounds worse and worse.

Fat Mike logic in a nutshell: If I go for it and lose it's my fault. If I punt and lose it's my defense's fault.

It's really as simple as that.

Humans figure out which outcome is more likely to satisfy their emotions, then work backward with reason to reach that same conclusion.

the funny thing is three and out after a failed fourth down puts the Packers in the same situation just down six rather than three. So if you're counting on a three and out when you punt you're essentially getting a free roll to go for it on fourth down.

Yep it is just a horrendous decision. There is no way to justify it.

Also, I'd bet the odds of a 3-and-out after going for it would be greater. Good chance SEA is happy with the FG, whereas if you punt, they open the playbook a bit to try to get the first down to win the game.

and there's a 20% chance or so that they don't make the 50-42 yard FG that they'd be attempting after a three and out, giving the Packers terrific field position down by 3

What a fantastic coach off to finish the Dallas / Atlanta game.

Dallas has the ball on Atlanta’s 30 yard line, with a first down, tie game, and 29 seconds left.

Both teams have 2 times outs left.

Garrett tries to run the clock out with a simple dive, but Quinn immediately calls timeout. The atl coach calls timeout after the 2nd down run as well, forcing Garett to run it a third time (picking up 5 extra yards).

Maher comes out for a 42 yard fg which barely squeezes through the upright. Would’ve been a 46 or 47 yarder if Quinn wasn’t a clown.

I still don’t understand what he was trying to do by calling his two timeouts (he didn’t have enough to get his team back the ball).
