Second down was run at 2:11 so an incomplete wouldn't have gotten it to the two-minute warning.

Yeah, that wasn't a good example.

Something that bothers me is when the team trailing calls a timeout with 2:01 to 2:05 on the clock. They are saving only 1 to 5 seconds but giving the offense a run/pass option.

What is the conversion % of a 58 yard fg? Doesn't sound easy to me

Indoors for a non-retread kicker? 80%

Every season field goals are getting easier, most look like they would be good from 65-70 now.

Not to mention the fact that it doesn't cost you anything to actually play defense. By having a defender there you can easily take up two seconds making a tackle instead of letting him go down right after the catch

based on some quick research the dip in 2014 can be entirely attributed to detroit starting the season with two kickers who went 1/9 from 40+ before signing matt prater lol

While it’s not a gimme, the conversion % is miles ahead of a Hail Mary or lateral-play from 5-10 yards back

As bad as the Texans last play defense was, the Saints were far worse on the previous drive.

edit--scrolling through it's pretty rough, needs some work. Definitely the bot needs to realize 4th and super long punts aren't gonna be cowardly outside of obvious situations. Some others had to due with more important to milk time than actually getting a first down like the buffalo one with 19 sec left.

Bot also likely isn't factoring in ties are better than losses but whatever.

That bot will set back meaningful punt reform by decades

To bring up another aspect of the Saints finish--what's with teams just continuing to blast kickoffs out of the back of the EZ regardless of the situation? Up 1 with the opposing team having :37 left and 1 TO is a golden opportunity to at least try to pop up the kick and make the other team field it around the 5 or so. The time eaten up by the return usually costs them an entire play on their drive, which is enormous even if they return it a bit past the 25 (I'd say the 35 might be the breakeven point), and could easily have been the difference between NO having the FG opportunity and Brees being forced to just heave it up from midfield on the last play.

Teams used to squib those all the time but just stopped doing them for no obvious reason.

I don't have the stats but if the kicking team is a yuge favorite when giving up the touchback, giving up a chance to return for possibly big yardage increases variance bigly so even if they only return to the 20 on average it might reduce kicking team's win probability

Yeah it seems like a situation where increasing variance, especially since it's so unorthodox, might not be a great choice for both win probability and job security

I wanna see them just blast it at somebody and hope they can't catch it or are dumb enough to not move out of the way

Yeah it's an interesting debate. The thing is against Brees in that stadium, I'm not even thinking I'm an enormous favorite with that amount of time left. I guess it's the kind of thing I wouldn't bother doing with <20s left or with over a minute, but I feel like this is a sweet spot where taking an extra 6-7 seconds off the clock is huge.

That Surrender Punt Twitter is why the interwebs are so awesome.

I wonder which punt since 2009 was worse than the 58.73 for the Cards’ punt w 1:10 left in OT from the DET 46 w the scored tied.

The twitter is based on this video by Jon Bois:

Pretty much all his chart party (and other) videos are great too, although they do tend to be quite long.

Seriously though. Instead of playing 10-15 yards off the LOS play 5 yards off and blitz. How often are these plays turned into 60 yard touchdowns, fairly rarely. Especially with brees he's dome this act time and time again with a couple timeouts and needing to get into field goal range

What in the hell were the Saints doing on the previous drive? A couple tackles in bounds makes a win is almost assured. Instead they let Hopkins get OOB and get Stills behind man coverage. They played like they were protecting against a FG, especially on the TD.
