You should be actively trying to maximize your possessions when you’re behind, not worrying about minimizing your opponents. The NBAs figured this out in end game situations, the Chargers and most of the NFL have not.
With > 10 min I agree with you, but if a team can be reasonably assured they will have the final possession (and have a reasonable chance of winning of course), then do it.
An NBA offense down 1 with 24 second clock off is not going to take a quick shot. They likely run it down to about 3 seconds and take a shot with a chance for tip in, with no chance for opposing team to score.
