Z32,
You could also post about Urban Meyer letting 30 seconds run off before calling a TO.

In the NFL, most if not all teams use a variation of the "Vermeil chart" that him and another guy developed when Vermeil was a young assistant at UCLA in the early '70s...

I think it was predicated on the assumption that they would normally outclass the opponent in talent, and overtime would be more favorable for them
I don't think they were considering overtime as a factor in 1970.

Seconded. He's as good a coach as there is in college right now, but his time management at the end was borderline criminal. Letting the clock run when LSU had the ball (and then calling a TO after 20 seconds or so)...THEN letting 15 seconds run off when they had the ball after the first play. That was atrocious. I know they have a lot of stuff going on...but geez, you cost your team 30 (or more) seconds, easily. That's a much better chance of winning.

Yes, but I hate UF so I hope they don't learn from that mistake.

Twenty seconds left in the half. Tech runs the ball on third down from about their own forty for no yards. Gailey CALLS TIMEOUT. And then punts.

Ron Zook not sticking with one quarterback.

The LSU coach almost running out of time at the end of the game when Flynn threw the miracle pass to beat Auburn 15 minutes ago.

Les Miles? He also kicked a PAT when up by 5 instead of OBV going for 2 in case Auburn had some miracle kick return - this was pretty dumb.

Norv Turner against the Chiefs this season. 1st and goal from the 5, throws four straight times instead of giving it to the best RB in the league who broke the rushing TD record the previous season. Not to mention that Rivers already had 3 picks that game. Chargers lost and dropped to 1-3.

QFT. Honestly, they overdramatized this SOOOOOOOOOO badly. There was like 3 seconds left on the clock as he fell down into the endzone when he caught it. Easily enough time if it was incomplete to kick a FG.

By far the dumbest thing Les Miles did was not go for two following the td, the playcall was fine, even if Les Miles didn't use the same game theory reasoning we can after the fact to justify it.

Lousiville has 4th and 2 on their own 20 with 1:53 left in the half and the clock running. Pitt lets the clock run down to 1:30, then calls their 2nd timeout.

Now with 3rd and 18 on their own 40 and about 45 seconds left, they let the clock run down to 25 and then call timeout with about 12 seconds left on the playclock. Wannstedt going ballistic throwing stuff in the coaches' booth. Pitt comes back out and throws an 8 yard out pass to the sideline, then punts.

from FJM

"Encarnacion's homer kick-started the Reds' rally against Eric Gagne. Encarnacion is the most volatile player in the Reds' lineup - his early season defensive woes and his slump at the plate have been counter-balanced by a few clutch homers, often in the same game.

Fortunately for him, Reds manager Dusty Baker seems to be more patient with Encarnacion than previous manager Jerry Narron. "I'm happy for him because this guy bleeds internally, big-time," Baker said.
"

I think that qualifies pretty solidly for "obviously stupid".

And by "that" I mean "Being Dusty Baker"

Anyone else who just saw the end of that high school game on ESPN2 can attest to this, but I just think I saw the dumbest decision ever by a coach. I'm in awe, this is so dumb. Anyways, these two teams are in overtime, it's just like college except they start from the ten. It's second overtime, the first team on offense turned the ball over, and the second team has third and goal from the six. They have already missed 4 of the 5 extra points they have tried on the day. For some reason, their genius coach decides he's going to kick the field goal on third down. Of course, the snap is high, the holder falls on the ball, they try again on fourth down, and it's blocked. They manage to make a field goal in the third overtime, but lose anyways. For kicking on third down when you've already shown you're completely incompetent at it, I think this thread deserves a bump, even if it is high school.

I forgot about this thread, thanks for the bump.

I've recently started playing Madden (welcome to 1995, YTF!), and I can't believe the ridiculous things I do with clock management sometimes (like calling a timeout then deciding to kick). Things I would never dream of advocating when sitting at home watching a game on tv.

Simmons is right, teams need a coach who's sole job it is to focus on stuff like this. People with other responsibilities can get distracted and botch it.

High school sports have no place on national TV, imo.

Anyway, I guess I should contribute something. Cecil Cooper is always doing dumb stuff as an MLB manager.

About a month ago the Astros were down 3-0 in the 7th and he left Oswalt in to hit for himself in the bottom half. No matter what happens next, this is an obvious pinch-hit situation. But now if I be results-oriented about it, it gets worse.

Oswalt walks first hitter of 8th inning and Cooper pulls him.
