I'm really pleased with the depth of Australian cricket atm - to have Hazelwood out and Carey just starting. Green also relatively new and giving England such a beating at present on what looks to be a classic English pitch. I couldn't be happier.

They are young. They might both come good at test level, neither of them might, one of them might. Time will tell.
Didn't we already go over Crawley and reject him as a test batsman and the English selectors finally agreed and dropped him? What has he done to deserve the second chance?

Hilliarious watching Root get hit in the box again Cricket: Random Discussion Thread

Oh dear - I'm guessing now England fans won't watch the rest of the series? Most dominant series win in at least what 50 years?

The strap of Haseeb Hameed's arm guard is flapping, the ball is travelling back over his head, and Zak Crawley looks like he has seen a ghost. Pat Cummins chooses violence.

There is a moment as the ball approaches Hameed where he clearly doesn't know where it is. The fear for him is obvious, for his wicket and his well-being.

The ball takes his glove, ramps up from his arm guard and flies off. He has no idea where it is. He's in the middle of one of the world's biggest sporting stadiums looking in one direction, while tens of thousands look another way.

If Hameed remembers his name at this point he's doing well.

Hey England, welcome to the suck.

Cummins follows up Hameed's accidental escape by attacking Crawley's off stump like it abused him on the playground. The entire over seems unfair. These two guys average 31 and 32 in first class cricket. Pat Cummins is a golden being of light that radiates perfect precision and happens to have the sixth-best bowling average of all time.

This is the worst England Ashes performance of my lifetime

The 02/03 capitulation was almost as bad but we at least had Vaughan playing brilliantly and that was one of the best test teams of all time we were playing. This is really only an OK Aus team which makes it even worse

I don’t live in the UK anymore and don’t follow county cricket but there has to be seriously wrong with the set up. The bowlers arent great after Jimmy but aren’t horrific but the batters outside of Root are terrible with a combination of bad technique and piss weak mental strength. How bad must the rest of the batsmen in county cricket

It seems there’s way too much focus on white ball cricket in the UK these days.

Also from a grassroots POV, as a parent of a very sporty son, cricket has just never been something he’s interested in and it’s a less convenient sport for them to play from a parent’s perspective than many of the others. Plus it’s rarely played in govt schools so I get that it doesn’t get many of the best athletes.

But still…surely they can find some better batsmen?

I reckon next Ashes series in Aus make it a joint England/Ireland tour - 2 test matches against Ireland, 3 against England or 4 against England,1 against Ireland

Pretty generous to say Stokes is as he averages 36

He bowls too slow is the main criticism.

But if he's going to be in the squad at all then you should play him. Otherwise don't have him in the squad.

How many examples are there of a player with a **** first class average but "good technique" making it at test level? Genuine question.

He'll probably get another test this series now, but I doubt he'll play again.
He'd make a lovely one test wonder quiz question
