Re: Cricket: Random Discussion Thread

Tamim Iqbal is a quality player. This is one the best 50s Ive ever seen. The mental toughness to play the way he has on this green pitch has been super impressive.

His 100 in Hamilton on a road while the rest of the team crumbled was amazing too. Hes my new favourite overseas player

Ah well Banga all out for 211, great after that start but looking at that pitch I was hoping for a sub 100 score Cricket: Random Discussion Thread

This is why you should plonk on an extra few runs to NZ Bat averages and also add a few from the bowlers

Ross Taylor just scored 200 on that

TBF it is not playing as bad as it looks

I haven't been posting much in here recently but I have to say you pom and Indian supporters (not kiwi as they are no chance) should be looking over your shoulder for the WC as that performance against India was without Starc, Hazlewood, Warner and Smith. Agree that Khawaja goes to 3 when Warner comes back to open with Finch - then Smith, Handscomb (who keeps too), Maxwell, Stonis, Cummins, Starc, Zampa (or Lyon - close call for this one) and Hazlewood.

I wondered why you mentioned that players at first then saw that they were minutes away from being involved. It's so ****ed up

Imagine if the WC was at NZ, was talking to a friend about it, and what ICC would've done.

Re: Cricket: Random Discussion Thread

Probably not much if the WC was to be held in a few months time.

Australia were touring England during the July 2005 attacks and kept doing so.

If it was exactly WC time I would guess increased security and play on, if Bangladesh specifically didn't want to play I would postpone their games for a week or so.

Re: Cricket: Random Discussion Thread

So Buttler mankaded by Ashwin last night.

Hopefully they fix the rule properly this time. I'd like to see it made that you can mankad people, but if you dont bowl once in delivery stride the next ball is a free hit.

Im generally pro mankading, but if you run up stop at the last second and wait till the batsman walks out of the crease its a bit of an angleshoot and a ****ty thing to do imo.

Re: Cricket: Random Discussion Thread

The way he did it was dirty. You could also debate that the ball was dead as soon as he aborted his delivery action. Doing it straight from the runup is fine, but not the way he did it.

Re: Cricket: Random Discussion Thread

Law 41.16 states: "If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out".

'The instant'. i.e. not after a pause, like Ashwin paused to allow Buttler to leave his crease.

Re: Cricket: Random Discussion Thread

My understanding of the rule is that the out/not out decision hinges on whether the wicket was hit prior to or after the moment the ball would've been released by the bowler had the delivery been completed in a normal fashion based on the run-up. Is that accurate?

I'm fascinated by cricket, but this is the first year I've really followed it on a day-to-day basis so I apologize if/when I offer up some ignorant takes or waste space with dumb questions ITT.

That’s right. Simply put, you’re not supposed to stop your delivery in anticipation of the batsman leaving his ground, only because he already left his ground.
The situation should have been declared a dead ball as the bowler aborted his delivery, which is a fairly common occurrence mainly due to the bowler messing up his delivery stride.

Always good to see new people getting into the game.

Hummmm...interesting. Obviously it would only work for white ball cricket, but I think I like it.

What a definitely would like though is the fielding team being able to use their DRS review for backing up (so one short may be signalled potentially). It would mean that if you need one to win then you sure as hell don't back up too early or you don't win unless you hit a boundary.

Also, re Ashwin, clearly it's a huge dick move. What makes it worse for me is what he did a few years ago when Eng played India. Someone bowled and the ball slipped out of his hand, so the ball just rolled along a side pitch. Trott was batting, in his own world as usual, and ran to the ball and hit it for four. I wasn't a fan of that to be honest, and a few Indian players got all irate - especially Ashwin. He called it against the spirit of the game. Seriously, **** him.

Re: Cricket: Random Discussion Thread

It's pretty simple afaic, have the rules whereby if the non striker's in his ground once the bowler's passed the umpire, bowling crease, some point (heck, just if he's in ground when a bowler breaks his run up maybe), he can't be mankadded, you can't have the sort of situation like Ashwin had there. If he's stealing ground otherwise then it's fair game

That's pretty much what the rule is already. The umpires messed up though

No. It's if he would have left his ground before you deliver.

Again, no. What 64 is suggesting is a more objective test, comparing the backing-up batsman's position to the bowler's at whichever moment.

The current rule focuses, much less measurably, on "the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball".

Precisely. That's why it was wrong to abort the delivery mid way through then pausing to wait for the batsman to leave his ground.

What 6 is proposing amounts to the same thing.

After watching the video, Ashwin's actions are inexcusable. The umpires got it wrong, Ashwin should come out and apologize if he has any dignity.
