Probably because the next man in isn't so great. Eng and Oz are similar in a way - some true world class players and a few team fillers who are pretty much just decent first class players.

Pretty much.

I mean, whats the plan? Bring back a Marsh brother?

All the talk of Handscomb keeping is lol. Guy has never kept in a Shield match ever. Good luck going to Asia and having to keep there after a few games keeping in the Big Bash

Maybe in the short term, but Wade is a real weak link imo. If they could somehow find someone good enough to play as a batter who could keep that would help their balance. Big if I know, but if I was Handscomb I'd be working on my keeping - he could play for years if he could make himself good enough. As it is, he's only a bad game or two from getting dropped.

The Alex Stewart approach to a long Test career. .. Ofc having your dad as chairman of selectors helps. .. So back to Marshes?

Wow - I hadn't realised England lost to WI. I'm not sure now which one is worse?

England losing at home is worse for sure. Aussies aren't expected to do well in Asia and it was a fairly close match they played.

Yeah no contest, reflected by the betting odds also. Bang are decent at home now, esp on the more sporting pitches that they are producing. They would compete well with most teams, In fact, other than India they'd have a decent chance against anyone imo.

Thats a ****y thing to do unless the batsmen is or was being a mega **** too

Will be interesting to see if Pollard gets a fine or a suspension

It is definitely not within the "spirit of the game". How can you definitively proof it was on purpose though?

You can't prove it but this is Pollard, one of the biggest pieces of **** in the game. It was pretty obvious that this was deliberate.

What is it with batsmen these days? They break down, all dehydrated after 2 hours at the crease and what's more the commentators are comparing these feats to Dean Jones' effort in India 3 decades ago. Get a grip. Cricketers these days should be much fitter and in a better position to do the innings that Dean Jones compiled.

Dean Jones was peak 80s fitness

No one was peak fitness back then - they were just tougher. That all went the year Ricky Ponting retired.

Not wearing a helmet is so dumb. Is it still optional? Must suck to be the bowler vs someone doing that too. Welp better hope this ball doesn't bounce head height, or I better hope I don't lose grip of this ball doing delivery, because if I do I could kill a man

Jimmy Anderson take a bow: 500th Test wicket.

Decent shot at becoming highest ever seam bowling wicket-taker before retirement IMO.

Nice to see Windies making the series competitive. I'd like to see a tie, otherwise Windies win. Jimmy needs another two years to overtake McGrath. He's a slight underdog imo but it's very close.

Yeah, full credit to the Windies. Being still very much live after the first innings (and even more so after the first match) is a great comeback.

England really could do with a couple more genuine Test match batters or they'll always be inconsistent imo. A bit like Oz, so it could be a great series.

Random thought - how good would a combined Eng/Oz team be? No great spinner perhaps, but Cook, Warner, Smith, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Starc looks like the basis for a pretty decent team, alongside other decent seamers (no idea who would get picked though!).

If England is struggling at home against a West Indies bowling line up, they are absolutely no chance against Starc, Hazelwood, Cummins/Pattinson and Lyon.

This is nearly embarassing and against a West Indies line up still not picked for their best players.

On a sidenote, I'm pretty sure Lyon would make a combined team.

Yes but they just beat SA 3-1, better than 1-2 as Oz did. Still, I'd make Oz favourites but anything could happen.

If you want two spinners then sure Lyon is in, but if you want one I'd make do witn Ali and have a long batting line up personally.

Doesn't Bairstow play as the 7th batsman?

I think he will come up short as he will retire at the end of your next summer.

500 Test wickets is EPIC for any bowler, let alone a pace bowler

Love seeing those super significant milestones
