The big problem with the Aussie team seems to be balance in the lineup. They are desperately lacking a good all-rounder and they don't have a world class wicketkeeper/batsman either which would mitigate this problem. For me, it leaves the Aussies having relatively few bowling options (although the quality is certainly there) and having a relatively weak lower order by modern standards. That perhaps puts too much pressure on the top order.
It's not an easy problem to fix. As somebody who grew up watching England in the early-mid nineties I can categorically say that trotting out guys like Mark Ealham - who could bat and bowl but wasn't good enough at either - isn't a formula for winning test matches.
It's mind blowing to me how weak the Aussies are when it comes to keeper batsmen. In limited overs games also, even more so actually. Seeing Wade play game after game in 50 over cricket and Neville play the T20 World Cup is just embarrassing. In the meantime, England have Jos Buttler in India not getting a game.
Surely they must have some other options. I reckon if I was a young Aussie batsman and good fielder I'd consider trying to make a go of being a keeper also.
