I like Tony, he's in my top 5. I like how high pitched his voice gets when something exciting happens. If someone's getting a hattrick or hitting 6 sixes in an over who would you rather have commentate, him or Richie Benaud?.
Hate Ian Chappell though, such a homer.. Used to really piss me off when Aussies were dominant, is a little more bearable now.
Richie Benaud is the god of commentators. If someone was clearly excelling in a passage of play then he'd shut up and let them get on with it, he'd allow the pictures to tell the story, and he'd only interject with really useful little insights.
Meanwhile Tony Greig would very loudly, and very unnecessarily, ejaculate into his undercrackers , while attempting to completely overshadow the events going on on the field.
I loathe Mark Nicholas. Hate everything about the guy. He tries to be articulate but just comes off like a giant pompous ass. Grieg is a great big match commentator, like any OD final. But he doesn't have a ton to say and gets annoying over a long period. Overall Benaud >> Greig.
England has the best commentators by far. Also West Indies have some very good ones (Cozier, Bishop, Holding). Aussie and NZ commentators are huge homers. Subcontinent ones are mostly boring and all are homers. South African I dunno, Allan Donald is ok.
It depends on what you want to listen to I guess. Mark Taylor probably gives the best insight out of all the channel 9 team but not the right guy if you want entertainment. Nothing beats Bill Lawry though when he gets excited. Love Michael Holding as well.

Agree with Isura on pretty much everything apart from Benaud. Never understood the fascination with him. Tons of commentators call him the best as well and I guess I just don't get it.
I don't find his analysis that much more insightful than anyone else's, and in the most exciting of times he can lull me to sleep, not what I want from a commentator..
Trying to compile a list of my fav. commentators from each test playing nation, and I'm having the hardest time with SL and NZ. I don't think there's one SL commentator that I can stand.
Been thinking about this for a while, but why are night watchmen used? Obviously the idea is to protect a higher order batsmen from getting out near then end of a days play, but obviously higher order batsmen are always going to have better technique to get through to the end of a days play than a number 9-11.
