I'm thinking even a 200 chase is going to be difficult...

Surely this last wicket wont add a further 20 from here

200 will be about even money going by betfair

really? i didn't check this at the time but i was told the chase would've been the 5th highest total ever chased down in india or something like that. ppl were talking as if india were pretty solid favs

anyway good test - as ****ed as i'm sure it is to play on these pitches, it's cool to not have the boring days of total batting domination that you can get in australia

Aus never traded below 1.5 even when 40/1 or whatever it was

Agree these matches are entertaining, takes the draw out of the equation but draws are boring anyway

Great test. Would've loved to see us chase it down but even still - I've been thoroughly entertained!

Hard to imagine that Steve Smith didn't know the rule, but he didn't even try to hide it so maybe he actually didn't. Very odd.

He's reported as saying after the game was over that he did know the rule. India accuse lolstralia of repeatdly abusing the system in the same way in this test.

tl;dr: Country made of crims is still unethical shock

Or he's just a giant weiner.

We bitched about England doing this in 2013 so I doubt he doesn't know the rule.

Both countries are pretty hateable/sketchy, news at 11

Smith went down a couple of notches in my book after that incident.

Smith should get ICC punishment for sure, but if there is one captain who behaves horribly every game so really should shut the **** up about this kind of thing it's Kholi. It's fair enough in the game, but afterwards he is in no position to take any moral high ground.

Why, because he gives people sendoffs and sledges on the field??

He has never been accused of cheating afaik, so the two things aren't comparable.

He's the indian captain and he thinks the opposition might've been systematically abusing a rule, has complained to the match officials about it, then he catches the opposition captain redhanded so he speaks out about it.

Now whether or not it can be proven that the aussies were doing it, we will see.

While I'd much rather see this situation die an unspectacular death because the last thing our first competitive home series in ages needs is more controversy, I can't blame him for saying what he did when the question was bought up, given what had transpired. Dhoni probably would've been more diplomatic.

Come on, I know he's a hero but he's way out of line on many occasions. He is not supposed to charge up to an umpire as often as he does, and he even does that after being told to go away. He's always giving loads of verbals etc as well - he's not alone of course, but he should accept that he pushes the line as much as he can get away with.

For sure Smith is way more out of line here than Kholi, no question about that, it's just his attitude afterwards is a bit rich.

yeah - Kholi's a **** - and maybe worse for the game long term in terms of eroding respect for the umpires (and questionably the oppo). [edit: I should say, he's a magnificent batsman - I voted for him in the 'most +EV sportsperson to watch' (or whatever it was called) thread - and not purely because he was the only cricketer. ]

Smith is cheating - as per the current rules - and that in principle should be clear up-able.

However, sigh, e.g., the (USA) NBA has just been going through stuff about players with body monitoring wristbands hidden under sweat-bands. In the long run I don't see how it is technologically possible to stop players getting advice about reviewing decisions.

But, otoh, why do we want to stop them from getting advice? The idea of the review systems is that on field umpiring mistakes can be corrected. Not that we should also play some meta-game: 'which team has better player judgements about umpiring decisions'.

Give teams a time limit (the one they have now) and let them at it.

One isssue could poentially be that local TV directors could quickly show a replay if that may favour the home team. Otherwise you could argue that any amount of hand waving with the dressing room is OK.

Does anyone know what rule Smith has broken? I'm sure he has, but it's not a law of the game so I assume some playing condition or something.

I should start with the disclaimer that I haven't thought this whole thing through.

But if the teams have feeds of whatever the third umpire will eventually receive that should improve the accuracy of decisions. That would require the ICC to be more pro-active in organizing - but that would be a good thing imo - and there is enough money in the game to do those things. (I think.)

Let me sleep on it to see if I see flaws in my agenda.

Kohli can be a **** on the field, and his on-field antics don't win him any friends internationally, I'm well aware of that fact.

Now if he was complaining about Starc's sledging or something, then I'd agree with you as it'd be a case of pot-kettle.

However since the issue here is that he believes his opponents are bending the rules, and he has evidence to support that claim, so he has every right to speak up. Him being a hardass on the field shouldn't take anything away from that. It's 2 separate issues.
