Viv also one of the 5 cricketers of the Century and was the clear 'best batsman in the world for 10 years'. Whatever the averages say (and his dropped off a lot in his last few years), he was one of the very best batters of this period

OK, so I've put your down time as 7am-1pm EST (which is an hour off from Eastern Daylight=Summer time), that's, I hope , midnight to 6am NZ time.

I really should have guessed you didn't mean what I thought you meant - sorry about that, otoh "degen wakes, clock shows 3, has to check light situation to determine am/pm" etc.

Also **** pitches and no helmets and good bowling attacks, 50 plus in that time period was outstanding, and his strike rate was Cricket Draft 2020 - Draft a test XI. for tests esp back then

Never apologise for selecting Viv in a world 11

we pick bowlers to take wickets and I'm picking the bowler who takes his wickets faster than any of this likely contemporaries on the list....a breathtaking wicket every 42 balls

it takes Marshall another 4.7 balls to take a wicket, Hadlee 8 extra, McGrath 9 extra and Imran almost 2 more overs for every wicket.

One of the fastest ever to 100, 200 and 300 test wickets, he is intimidating, accurate and ultra consistent

I pick Dale Steyn

pollock an excellent choice good player,

only 2 centuries in 156 innings, maybe a victim of where he batted in the order, not sure

He is also in that mould of a keeper batsman like your Sangakkara and Gilchrist and not what arguably would be the preferred keeper to have if you have Warney in your side (although capable I reckon to be as good a keeper to Warney as Gilchrist was
if not better).

So my next pick is the Zimbabwe cricket great, and much celebrated former England coach in Andy Flower.

Someone who if it wasn't for the political upheaval in Zimbabwe that caused his retirement could have played another 20 test matches more at least.

Stats

Tests Matches Played: 63
Runs scored: 4,794
Batting average: 51.54
50s: 27
100s: 12

Catches/Stumpings: 151/9

Good pick, very underrated. Picking a solid keeper/bat early is a key to having the best team since there are very few around.

Batting Average 57

Averages 40 with the bat when he keeps, averages 69 with the bat when he doesn't keep.

I'm initially drafting him as a batsman only but he's my reserve keeper if things go tits up later. As a pure batsman he averages more than everyone else with the exception of Bradman.

He has 11 double tons and that's more than anyone than Bradman. He has a triple ton too. Tendulkar hasn't even got a 250 once.

His stats are padded by a lot of good scores vs Zimbabwe and early Bangladesh but so are everyone elses. If you discount Zimbabwe and Bangladesh he still averages 52 which is higher than Lara or Tendulkar if you do the same to them.

More runs scored at number 3 than anyone else in the history of the game.

When he scored his triple ton he also scored a ton in the 2and innings. He scored more runs that match than Lara ever has in a single match.

12400 runs. That's #6 on the all time list and everyone above him on the list had 50-100 more innings than him.

Beast with a bat.
I'd draft him as a pure batter too, that dropoff is huge. He was unreal good when he gave up keeping. Great backup keeper to have though..

I'm going to take Sir Vivian Richards

I don't think it's necessarily a pure value pick but he's a pure match-winner with great attacking nature as a batsman and the high strike rate is important as my team will bat deep and try to win matches.

His test average is only 50 but he did it in every country and the overwhelming majority of his innings were against the best in the world. He took on undrafted and undrafted and often came out ahead which is more than you can say for almost any other batsman of the era.

Moreso, he had an incredible force of will about him and a real winning mentality with the absolute right amount of "**** you" in him. This was imperative in turning the Windies into the best side in the world. A lot of this narrative is detailed in the superb documentary Fire in Babylon.

A great fielder and later in his career a reliable slip fielder and an incredible record as a test captain.
A damn steal. Think he should have been the first batsmen taken.

This thread is great and I'm loving that it's active 24 hours a day with these differing time zones.

When I saw my position in the draft I looked at my list and had 2 realistic/optimistic picks for my 1st and 2and picks. Stoked to get my first 2 picks, but all my sleeper picks are slowly dropping by the way side. Don't think anyone's made a bad pick yet.

PeteBlow is awake from his sleep time and as of the time of this post he has 3 hours and 46 minutes to make his picks.

No Lynches found a test match simulator written in python that we're going to use for a tournament after the draft to decide the winner.

Feel free to give your opinion on any picks made so far but obviously don't mention any eligible redacteds

I'm loving the fact that there's 11 players in the draft. Each round of picks makes a test team.

How would you order the lineup of:

Tendulkar
Lara
Marshall
Murali
Imran Khan
Ambrose
Warne
McGrath
Hadlee
Kallis
ABD

Formidable lineup but light on batsmen and who opens?

I like that.

Kallis can open because lets face it, he's not gonna get a chance with the ball.

Is murali better than McGrath with the bat?

Turns out he is the better batsman.

I never knew Murali hit 29 sixes in test cricket
