good for hawaii, they love their football. I hope their win at least brought a smile to anyone suffering from storm Lane.

That was literally insane

They had 100% win probability and instead had to kick a FG (worst FG kicking team in the country last year), which they probably miss like half the time, then give CSU the ball back with 40 seconds, and CSU's last 5 drives were:

3 plays 75 yards TD
2 plays 72 yards TD
3 plays -7 yards Punt
4 plays 99 yards TD
8 plays 75 yards TD

Not crazy to think they literally lit like 20% win probability on fire for absolutely no reason

Hawaii did what they had to do.

Spoiler:
To cover the 2H line (Hawaii +10)

Yeah it's bad. It's been bad for a while. I had thought he was drinking before broadcasts til someone here told me he had a stroke. Even without that he's 83 now, most anyone is gonna fall way off by that age.

Yeah he's around, he just decided to retire a few years ago and rob us of a proper foil to Mark May

Man do I miss Dr. Lou. And the pep talks. That was the pinnacle of cfb studio entertainment.

I've always been partial to the times they bring out a kid with cancer and he does much better analysis than them, is more charming than them, insults them without them picking up on it, etc.

I think the entertainment pinnacle is the clock errors made over and over again by coaches making $500k+.

But I did warn guys that no one had the chemistry like Lou/Mark/Gomer. They knew who would play the role of hero/villain goofball/straight man every time and executed perfectly.

Oh the clock errors, among other things, are great. Note my "studio" caveat.

God I miss that Lou Holtz / Mark May show. Was so awesome.

I vaguely remember a weekly segment where he gave a fake motivational speech? All I really remember is endless amounts of spit and me laughing so hard it hurt. Every time.

true.

As a compromise Boob Davie used to repeat "As a coach you never want to be known for bad clock management." As he is in both of his jobs before and after the studio.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about, the pep talks. You can still dig up a couple on YouTube.

There was this absolutely incredible one that is not out there unfortunately. Lou tells a story from his youth about swimming across the Ohio River with his crew. One dude was scared. Said he couldn't swim. Lou says he'll save him if he starts drowning. Anyway, dude runs into trouble and Lou doesn't help because he's afraid of drowning himself. My friends and I were in college at the time watching this live stoned to the bone. We all could not believe this pep talk. It was about the dumbest thing anyone had ever said and it was broadcast on live television.

I did find a 1976 NYT article that alludes to the story, but it's not the full, idiotic version Lou told on tv.

Purdue / Northwestern should be good, Brohm returns most of that offense and NW is a trendy dark horse pick among sports journalists who went to NW.

Should also be interesting to see whether UCF slogs out a win, or whether they look like they haven't missed a beat and are ready to contend for a playoff spot

Alright, I'll start a "week 1" thread if no one else is doing a write-up. Even less informed than usual though, so ping me if you'd rather.
