Re: College Football Offseason thread

Looks like QB Will Grier is transferring from Florida. No huge surprise there.

Re: College Football Offseason thread

How many years of eligibility does Treon have left?

Hopefully it's about 7.

crazy. that has to hurt if you're a gator fan. Now you're back to Treon and relying on freshmen i guess?

Pretty bad situation. Grier was going to play on game 7 of next year (he was not eligible to play right at the start of 2016). Treon Harris (not a good quarterback in Mac's system (or anyone's) and Luke Del Rio (who previously walked on at Alabama and also backed up at Oregon State) are the two options. LDR allegedly looked okay in spring practices but I'm not really holding my breath for someone who has transferred twice and not super heavily recruited.

Wish we had gotten Jacob Eason as I think he's more ready to play right now, but UF is going to get Felipe Franks, a highly ranked QB from FL (who was previously committed to LSU): http://sports.yahoo.com/florida/foot...-Franks-148655

Franks seems really raw still but has really good upside and has a good build. He'll probably be considered for the job too, depending on how the spring goes. There's a tiny % chance we try to sign another QB (not including Kyle Trask), such as Dawayne Haskins, but that's a pretty big long shot IMO.

If he is transferring, Sumlin is either gone soon or is on a very, very hot seat next year. Unless they already have a handshake deal in place with someone like Herman, I don't think they fire Sumlin this year. But the alumni are getting very unhappy very fast.
So, the idea is for A&M to spend ~$25 mil in buyouts to fire the old Houston coach, to hire the current Houston coach? jfc, perhaps Houston can save you all some time and money, and tell you who they would hire in the event Herman left, and A&M can hire them instead.

Herman will win 12+ games and go to another NY6 bowl next year at Houston. I doubt he'd walk away from that this late in the game, and essentially kill his stock by inheriting that dumpster fire in College Station, where even if you defy the odds and win 9 games/year in the toughest division in college football, you are still seen as a bum.

I think Herman stays at Houston until either Texas or tOSU calls. He's already denied interest in equal to/better jobs as A&M in USCe and UGA.

He looked pretty good last night for La Tech. But he was a graduate transfer and now has no eligibility left so that was his last college game ever.

Even as an Aggies fan and alum, I would find it hilarious if they fire Sumlin to hire Herman. That can't be the right thing to do wtf. And would Herman even take it, he just signed an extension himself.

Re: College Football Offseason thread

Fascinating WAPO article on the college athletics facilities arms race.

I do wonder how sustainable it all is. Right now TV money and seemingly bottomless booster-pockets have enabled many programs to get away with some pretty asinine financial decisions (consider the recent talk of firing Miles and Sumlin with enormous buy-outs, as well as some of these over-the-top stadium and facilities improvements/expansions). But if the environment changes over the next 5-10 years (ESPN losing subscribers, boosters contributing less, average fans crying "uncle" over escalating costs, among other things) then many athletic departments have the potential to do long term financial damage to their institutions (per the article, GA Tech's athletic department has amassed $229M in debt--WTF?).

Re: College Football Offseason thread

Yeah, Tech updated nothing except the football stadium for like 50 years so they essentially had to rebuild 2 basketball arenas (one that they refer to as a practice space but it used to hold women's bball games and is also the volleyball arena), rebuild and expand the tennis center, add an indoor practice facility, and they're also in the process of tearing up/redoing the golf practice area (about 8 acres just off campus that can be played in a couple directions to cover all different kind of shots).

While they have that debt, they also have close to $150M+ of project-specific pledges that are paying for a good chunk of that.

If the conference networks can transition to a decent PPV model similar to directtv's NFL sunday ticket they can push out the day of reckoning further. But even this model could be tough since a lot of fans become fans by watching the games for free on network TV. Cord-cutting is on the rise and if they can't transition to a PPV model, ESPN won't be able to pay out the big money any more.

Re: College Football Offseason thread

Man, that could actually have way further reaching implications than I really thought about: what happens to how and what people come to like when they don't have this default smorgasbord presented daily that they don't think of as paying for as they go.

I guess having the first X stream free is something but it isn't a replacement.

They're stacked with QB commits though. He won't play for another two years I'm guessing, if that. Plus, Baker is coming back next year.

Looks like Kyle Allen will transfer to Houston. Will have to sit out 2016.

Also, UGA elite Returner Isaiah McKenzie appears to possibly be transferring to Miami. He didn't get much action as a WR.

Nevermind about McKenzie. This is why I sorta hate following rumors.
