Carolina - 0:12
CAR kicked off, D. Hester returned kickoff for 19 yards
Carolina kicks a FG with 12 seconds left in the half and then kicks deep to Devin Hester. Hester doesn't break it so Fox gets no serious media criticism for it but WTF are they thinking kicking deep to anyone there, let alone Hester.

Hester was carted off the field earlier in the game was he not? Eh, either way it was dumb.

How about Del Rio's onside kick right after they tied the game? Yeah it was successful but I can't say that I agree with it.(they clearly must have saw the Bills front line cheating on the kick but still...)

Hester wasn't carted off until the 3rd quarter.

was it in the browns game yesterday when they had 4th and ~7 from the PIT ~30 yardline and kicked a FG down 7 with 3+ min to go? i thought that was pretty dumb.

Down by 1 with about four minutes left against Auburn, Sly Croom went for it on 4th and 15 from midfield. Nevermind that this would be a bad decision if you had USC's offense. MSU had exactly ZERO plays so far in the game that went for 15 yards.

Browns game- Crennel kicks the FG down 7 with 3:00 to go. Not only that, he then set up some sort of quasi onside kick where Dawson booted it in the air to the 30 yard line. Wouldn't you just want to kick it deep so if you got the ball back you'd have better field position? Romeo Crennel is an idiot and in this country, idiots get rewarded with contract extensions.

I didn't see the kick. But the theory behind kicking it to the 30 yard line is that the people at that distance aren't ball handlers, therefore more likely to fumble. Happened last week in the SF/Arizona game, where an SF LB mishandled the kickoff at the 30.

The Vikings did the same thing against the Giants in a wild card game 10 years ago and it worked, so I didn't think this was necessarily dumb.

But yeah, Crennel did look pretty f'in stupid for most of the game imo.

Also, Shaun Rogers

The thing about the Browns game is that you knew the Browns weren't getting close again.

But they lined up in an onsides formation. The hands team was on the field. That kick in particular was fielded by the 2nd TE.

Also Spaeth waved for the fair catch then took a knee to be doubly sure the refs knew he wasn't trying a return. Since they were getting it past the 30 and it was kicked straight up instead of a bouncing squib type kick he had little incentive to try to get extra yards. Also considering that Pittsburgh had Mendenhall deep, who almost gave Cleveland the ball at the 2 earlier in the quarter and had 3 fumbles in the preseason, it's even less of an excuse.

Crennel doing that dumbass kick was horrible. Pittsburgh was unable to handle basically any punts or kicks the entire game. Kick it to them and recover at their own 5 yard line. Boom! Tie game!

bump for WVU clock management...

2 TO left with <30 sec not calling a timeout and leaving a timeout on the table when forced to throw hail mary

The Twins box score tonight says:

A.Everett PH-DH

What lead to that and how could it ever be a good move?

I think Mr Burns was the manager for the day, and he said something about playing the percentages. It's something smart managers do to win the game.

fo claims that surprise onside kicks are good.

del rio is one of the most aggressive risk takers in the nfl. i believe the jags went for in on 4th more than any other team last year (or the highest percentage of the time, one of the two). that is also supposed to be good.

just because something worked once doesn't mean it's the right decision. coaches are rewarded for bad decisions all the time.

If we ever have a thread for times coaches do something brilliant, we'd have to include his best move of that game.

"You there, Strawberry: hit a home run!"

[home run]

"I TOLD him to do that!"

Today's ARI @ WAS game:

ARI is down 17 to 24 with 2:46 left. Facing 4th and 4 from their own 48. They need a TD to win and there's no guarantee you'll get another possession if you give up the ball. So the decision should be easy, right? Not for Coach Wisenhunt. Punt. ARI never got the ball back again.

It's particularly galling because Wisenhunt has had a tendency to not be as conservative in his play calling. Several times he's gone for the TD, 4th and goal from the opponent's 1. I've no idea why he basically gave up on the game today.

I thought of this thread while I was watching this game earlier and literally LOLing. A big WTF on this one.

I don't follow Ariz closely, but I also thought I had heard of Wisenhunt being fairly aggressive. Now that you've confirmed I just LOLed again.

When the Packers, needing two touchdowns with 13 minutes left in the game, punted on fourth and two from about the Cowboys' 40 yard line, I wrote "Game Over" in my notebook.

EDIT TO ADD: Oh, and all those college-type trick plays the Dolphins ran today would have been in this thread, except every last one of them resulted in a TD.

Colts have the ball 1st and goal at the 2, trailing 20-14 with 1:23 left.

Instead of running the ball to either score or run the clock, they throw incomplete passes on 1st and 2nd down, then score on a 3rd down run.

They leave Jacksonville with 1:07 and all 3 TOs, which proves to be enough to kick the winning FG.

Pitt down 9 with like 45 seconds left no TO at the eagles 20-25 with 4th and 15, (and a backup qb), go for it instead of kicking the field goal.

O/U on how many times that will be tried by other teams this year?
and against the Pats specifically?

I heard about this second hand, but it doesn't seem obviously stupid to me...

P(Scoring TD from 20 on 4th&15)*P(Advance ball into field goal range and kick a field goal in 30 seconds from onside kick field position)>P(Kick a field goal from 20)*P(Advance ball into end zone in 30 seconds from onside kick field position)

I divided both sides by P(Recover Onside Kick) to simplify, obv. It's much easier to suck out in one play the 4th&15 spot than it is to advance the ball all the way downfield and score a TD without running out of time.
