I think RR will do a decent job at Arizona if he can start getting his own guys in quick. And I mean quick. I also think he'll get more than 3 years at Arizona. Always thought he was a decent coach. Arizona did well here.

Tulane is supposedly announcing the new coach on Dec. 1 and announcing the new stadium Dec. 8. Which means that it's probably a coach that is currently employed somewhere. RIP Cpt. Leach.

According to OSU's Scout site, Urban to OSU is official. Bill Greene is reporting the deal is done, it will be signed after the Michigan game, and will be formally announced next week.

All you need to do now is run good in 1 game and you have a national title.

Of course this matters. Meyer will destroy the weak ass Big Ten teams. How could this not matter? No more #walrusball. Huge recruiting benefit.

Apparently Tulane had Monken (OSU OC) lined up but it fell apart over timing issues related to OSUs current season. He wouldn't have been able to coach the bowl game if he accepted the job.

RE: Coaching Topics - All In Here
Back 20 years ago when we went to 5 bowls in 5 years from '88 to '92, there were only 18 bowls and 109 teams. Now, for these two bowls in a row we're supposed to be so proud of, there are 35 bowls for 120 teams.

Just making any old bowl isn't an accomplishment. It should be expected of any below average bcs conference program. Ten out of the 12 B1G teams should be bowl eligible this year.

Can't really believe there is any debate about firing Ron Zook. To summarize a lot of what has been said:

We all agree:

1. Ron Zook is a great guy. Great representative of the University, great with the players etc. etc. We all wish him the best and we all wanted him to succeed.

2. He hasn't. 18-37 conference record is not good enough. Winning only 4 games in 20 some odd tries against top 20 teams is not good enough. Constant special team failures are not good enough. Getting to only 3 bowls in 7 seasons with two of those being pretty bottom of the barrel bowls is not good enough. Even in the Rose bowl year, we really were never in the race for the conference champioinship and the Rose bowl took us over Georgia due more to loyalty to the Big Ten and perhaps a lot of Uncle Jim arm twisting. Recruiting is slipping. We rank 62. SIXTY TWO in the country and have only one 4 star recruit. We rank near the very bottom of the Big Ten in recruiting. Zook has lost the fans. And fair or not, the media makes fun of Zook and shows him absolutely no respect. Now the refs are showing a complete lack of fear or respect of Zook as they make terrible calls against us with impunity.

Some of you remember the Mike White and John Mackovic years. If you do, you remember the feeling that we always believed our team was better coached. We frequently beat teams we weren't suppose to. We expected a bowl game every year, even though there were way fewer bowls back then. We had winning records against almost all of our Big Ten foes during that period including tOSU (scUM being the major exception. Under White once he got things rolling we went something like 6-0 against MSU, Wisky, PU, Minny, IU, were .500 against Iowa, lost to NU only a couple of times etc. Along with Iowa, we were the next rung of the ladder behind tOSU and scUM for most of that 12 year period. We had 28 straight sell outs. Season tickets SEASON TICKETS! were capped at 50,000. What happened? When Mackovic bolted (the only Illinois football coach ever to leave for another job), as he was the AD, we had no AD nor did we have a football coach. Now if we still had wise old John Cribbet as chancellor, things may have been different, but with the incompetent and completely out of touch Mort Weir in charge, instead of hiring an AD and then doing a search for a new football coach, we hastily promoted Lou Tepper before hiring an AD. Then the reign of RG began (no need to elaborate). Now at the time Mackovic left, we had the second best winning record in the Big Ten behind tOSU over the previous 4 years and had been to 4 bowls in a row and two of those were Jan 1 bowls and we had won a share of the Big Ten title in 1990. If you add in Mike White's Rose Bowl that would be 2 Big Ten championships and 3 Jan 1 bowls in 12 years. I'm sure a competent AD could have hired someone with a proven track record of success at that time. Major, major mistake which essentially erased the 12 year period of relative success. By the time Tepper was done, we were back to the Moeller years in quality.

The point I make by retelling our recent history is that is CAN be done at Illinois. It has been done at Illinois and hopefully MT is the right guy who can hire the right guy to do it again. Circumstances are such that a change has to be made even if I were to concede to some of you that it isn't fair to Zook to not give him more time. There's too much negativity around the program, opinions have hardened and it all puts Zook in such a bind that recruiting is harder than ever, filling the stands is harder than ever and rebuilding fan confidence is harder than ever. To continue with Zook and expect him to pull some miracle at this point with everything stacked against him is what would be unfair to Zook and to the Illinois program. It's like changing baseball managers. It doesn't change the players, but due to the circumstances, we have no choice. And assuming MT can bring in the right guy, a much brighter future may await us.

What are your expectations for Illinois football considering the conference shifts and state of recruiting these days?

2nd tier - somewhere between 5th and 8th every year with making bowl games in 4 of 5 seasons and competing for a title with a lucky win once every 5 years

clearly set-up better than Indiana, Purdue, N'western, and Minnesota

Probably at weaker end of tier with Wisconsin, MSU, and Iowa. Other schools currently have edge due to recent success.
