..................

in 1970 Tom McMillen was put on the cover of "Sports Illustrated" and the cover proclaimed the he was the best high school player in America

McMillen dominated in h.s. in a rural area where the ball couldn't have been anywhere near to the level of basketball in big city locales

he was a tall guy who could shoot - he was a great player if you analyze him for college - an All American at Maryland -

in the NBA he averaged 8 points and 4 rebounds per game

he wasn't quick - he wasn't fast - he wasn't strong - and he couldn't jump

in reality he wasn't anywhere remotely close to being the best high school player of 1970

...............

here is a listing of the 1974 college All American 1st and 2nd teams which McMillen wasn't chosen for

all of those players were better than him

and all of them were in high school when he was in high school and were all but surely better than him in high school

and there were many who didn't go to college for the common reasons who were better than him:

Marvin Barnes

John Shumate

David Thompson

Bill Walton

Keith Wilkes

Len Elmore

Larry Fogle

Bobby Jones

Billy Knight

Campy Russell

Bill Walton. But he wasn't recognized as such due to subtle racism.

I played HS ball against Tom McMillen. He wasn't quick, he wasn't fast, he wasn't strong, he couldn't jump, but the boy had heart. He never quit. NEVER

I played h.s. ball against St. Anthony's - a DC team that was ranked # 1 in the country by Sport Magazine

they were coached by John Thompson

of course, they crushed us

they had 6'8" Donald Washington who got a full scholarship to UNC but broke his foot and had bad grades and had to leave - even though the injury was severe he went on to play some ABA ball -

they also had Johnathan Smith - a 6'1" guard who did very well under Thompson at Georgetown - I was guarding him and I remember he took a jumper and his feet were in my face - I was a little guy 5'9"

they also had 6'9" Merlin Wilson who also did very well at Georgetown under Thompson

Merlin Wilson later played pro ball in Europe

that h.s. team was so good they were scary -
