Add McDonagh/Byfuglien to that list.

I think the locks are Suter/McDonagh/Byfuglien, hard to say w/ the rest.

Trade lou to who ever will take him, tell Raymond to **** off, find a replacement for Salo.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

hi gaiz!! How about them Nucks eh? This is the end of the AV and Luongo era. Many fans will blame AV, Luongo, Sedins, Kesler, Booth, Edler (all rightfully so). Gillis has to shoulder some blame for changing the team at the deadline. Scoring was a problem vs. LA (and toward the end of the reg season). Once Daniel went down, scoring vanished. Kesler, Booth, Raymond were nowhere to be found. Higgins picked up the slack at the end of the regular season. Lapierre chipped in here and there. Can't say Hodgson would have been the answer but that sick shot would have been nice.

Raymond can rot in the KHL for all I care. Only Raymond would fall down with a wide open wrap-around. A freaking American kid sealed a win over Team Canada in the U18 a few days ago with the exact same move.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

I'm going to go ahead and quote some of A5's post over here.

For some reason against these highly skilled powerplays the Pens constantly overcommit and overpursue and that balls to the wall aggression ends up leaving all kinds of open passing lanes to exploit. Two years in a row our 'elite' PK has gotten dumped on in the playoffs and both times we failed to make any adjustments whatsoever. I just don't get it at all.
I think it's variance and ****ty goaltending but you're absolutely right that the Flyers ran the Pens' skaters ragged. I think you're overrating Tampa Bay last year, they weren't all that great on the power play. I think they just got hot at the right time, as they say.

Definitely with you on not getting it at all.

Quote:
The entire defense was trash except Letang, who wasn't up to his usual standards. Honestly I could do without seeing Martin, Orpik, and Michalek in a Pens uni ever again. Disgraceful playoff performance from them after what was a disappointing regular season. Complete turnaround from what I saw in 09-10 from those guys.
They weren't great this series, no doubt, but I strongly disagree with most of this. Martin was so shockingly bad in his few games to make me question my view of him being decent enough to play beside Letang. That doesn't take dazzling play just not ****ting the bed but he was incapable of getting close to that level. Still, I think you're overrating what second and third pairing guys typically bring to the table. I don't think we can get those results with Crosby missing so much time and Staal missing 20 games, not to mention last year, with the defensemen being close to what you describe. I think blue-line depth is actually a big strength on the team.

For some evidence of this, the Flyers' 5-on-5 shot rate in the series was 23.8 shots per 60 minutes. That's third lowest in the playoffs so far. In the regular season they were at 31.3. That's not the be all end all or anything, and I do think there is a shot-quality argument to be made here because there were some terrible turnovers, allowed breakaways and good ol' fashioned standing around leaving guys free to tuck in the awful rebounds Fleury was giving up but at the very least they did a pretty good job at suppressing shots. And yeah, that's all time and not just tied but the Pens were up for a lot of the series.

You know what makes defensemen look bad? Their goalie giving up a goal every five shots.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

1. Trade Luongo for whatever
2. Trade Raymond's rights for whatever
3. Examine if there's any market for Booth
4. Trade Ballard is at all humanly possible
5. Trade Alberts if possible
6. Maybe try to re-sign UFA's Salo, Pahlsson, & Rome
7. Probably re-sign RFA's Gragnani & Weise
8. Obviously re-sign RFA Schneider
9. See if any of Schroeder, Jensen, Connauton, Sauve, etc are ready to play

3 & 4 probably not possible (and maybe not even 1 or 5), so...

(barring what Luongo, Raymond, Alberts might return in trades as far as roster players today)

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Higgins - Kesler - Booth
X - X - Hansen
Malhotra - Lapierre - Kassian
Weise

Hamhuis - Bieksa
Edler - X
Ballard - Tanev
Gragnani

Schneider
Lack

~$10.5m in cap room

Gross, kind of more of the same, with some money left to re-tool the 3rd line, and find someone to beef up the 2nd pairing if they don't want to bring Salo back. Obviously more money to spend if they can move Booth or Ballard, but I'm not holding my breath. So probably set up for yet another super regular season (BANNERZZZZZ) and failure at some point in the playoffs, sweet.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

well they have money to match for sure, especially given the temporary overage you're allowed to carry in the summer (10%?), barring whatever the new CBA looks like. so i mean if someone wants to go nuts and offer sheet Schneider it wouldn't be that big a problem, of course unless Luongo isn't being cooperative, or they can't find a deal they like. as per the current compensation:

$1,034,249 annual cap hit or less: No compensation
$1,034,249 — $1,567,043: Third-round pick
$1,567,043 — $3,134,088: Second-round pick
$3,134,088 — $4,701,131: First and third-round pick

$4,701,131 — $6,268,175: First, second and third-round pick
$6,268,175 — $7,835,219: Two first-round picks, a second and third
$7,835,219 and higher: Four first-round picks

i could easily see someone giving him a $3.1m contract given the compensation is only a 2nd, but the Canucks would probably be happy enough to match that. but if someone wanted to go nuts and go into the next bracket it could be a problem, and a 1st + 3rd wouldn't exactly be a great return, especially if it's from a top half team in the league.

but yeah, obv hoping it all gets resolved sooner than later, but maybe not bc of the CBA. and i guess the possibility still exists that they'd sell high on Schneider and keep Luongo for ease of all this other stuff, but there might be too many hurt feelings at this point for that to happen.

Schneider could hold out for pekka rinne money if he wanted. 7 hears 50 some million wouldn't be a stretch for the #1 'prospect' in the world.

If he gets offer sheeted, it's some ridiculous contract for sure.

vancouver ran pretty bad but they don't have enough scorers imo. i don't know where they're going to get one, either, but dealing luongo or schneider could help.

if david booth returns to form, that might help too. seems like vancouver's got the sedins and a bunch of guys who hurl pucks at the net. still, there's no reason to think they won't be a really good team next year.

what people don't realize is that schneider is 26, and will be an unrestricted free agent next year. he's not getting some huge offer sheet, that would be idiotic. thing is, vancouver can't keep him beyond next year unless they deal luongo, so they have to make that choice this off-season.

You realize that if he gets offer sheeted a deal that's 60 million for 10 years or something crazy like that, he won't be a UFA for 10 years right?

This is basically his UFA year.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

well i mean Niemi got $3.8m/year, but Niemi won a SC. Schneider has appeared in 68 regular season games and 8 playoff games. and as CS pointed out during the long break between Games 4 and 5, he has 1 career playoff win under his belt. so basically if someone wants to go nuts and give him Rinne money, then lol, go right ahead. we all think he looks pretty good, but getting into the $4.7-6.3m bracket is almost certainly a big mistake for anyone. keeping Luongo and taking the 1st+2nd+3rd might work out ok in the long-term.

If he gets offer sheeted for a significant amount, the team who signs him has to give up a zillion draft picks if the Canucks don't match. For a goalie. It would be the WOAT offer sheet, and that's saying something, since Thomas Vanek got an offer sheet.
