In Gretzky's defense he was never a rookie in the NHL.

i know we LOL at the combine every year, but seriously, how can any of this be of any use for the draft?

Quote:
Wing span: In the non-goalie category, the players that measured the longest wing spans were USNTDP center Stefan Matteau, Kitchener center Radek Faksa, Prince George (BCHL) left wing Jujhar Khaira, Ottawa defenseman Cody Ceci and Quebec center Mikhail Grigorenko, who tied for seventh at 77.75 inches.

...

Bench press: Prince Albert center Mike Winther did the most repetitions with the 150-pound weight at 17 (ETA: LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL). Kent School (Conn.) center Cristoval Nieves was next with 15, followed by Regina forward Chandler Stevenson (14) and Moose Jaw defenseman Morgan Rielly (13). Wilson, Khaira and University of Michigan left wing Phillip Di Giuseppe tied for fifth with 12 reps each.

...

Grip strength: The player you'd least like to shake hands with? Rielly, who had the strongest right-hand grip at 167 pounds. Beauvillier (161), Edmonton left wing Mitchell Moroz (160), Gaunce (159), and St. John's Prep (Mass.) right wing Samuel Kurker (155) make up the rest of the top five. Vasilevskiy and Calnan had the strongest left-hand grip at 155 pounds. Rielly (150), Marcantuoni (149), and Matheson (148) round out the top five.

grip strength seems a little odd. Obv you wouldnt want to base all your decisions on these things, but i dont see why bench press and wingspan is totally worthless (and squats/plyometrics).

edit: i guess they didnt talk about squats per say, but thats info id want to know.

given that the highest bench is 17 reps at 150#, it's pretty much a useless measure.

I never understood why the combine measured the bench that way, and not the same way a lifting meet would work (do your max 1 rep).

Just a heads up, this is a girl's way of saying you're not a big enough dbag for her. Think about what kind of non-reason reason that is. How many of your bros' girls are with them 'because they have so much in common.'

So keep looking for the rare cutie that you don't always have to treat like dirt.

i know nothing about any of this, but i'd assume that bench reps are prob a decent measure for hockey, to indicate what kind of strength one has for battles around the puck, on the boards, in the corners, in front of the net, etc. for say the NBA? maybe not so much.

also don't know if max strength would be all that important to know. maybe i guess? but if a kid is a power lifter, you'd probably know it already by watching him flatten ppl when he plays.

idk...

ya, your spot on for why its useful, and id rather see a max as well.

Sylar, it still shows how people do relative to each other though, so i think there is some value.

no, it shows that none of them benched for any significant period of time, and thus bears very little indication on their bench potential. unless they plan on staying at current strength level in the long-term, it means nothing.

think J.Staal really wants a move to Carolina, or so the rumours go. might not be about the money really. this is also weird too bc i heard they might not do much with JS until Sid is re-signed anyway, and talk was that they wouldn't keep all 3 centers, so Staal would obv be the one to go. that offer of Sutter, Faulk, & #8 sounds pretty good, if real. i might take that if i'm the Pens.

does that Sens offer sound any good? that one from the Rag$ at the trade deadline seemed a lot better, but who knows.
