yeah good luck on signing him, or anyone really, to some kind of conditional contract like that, lol

i just figure lots of teams will have cap space, lots could use a 2-time SC winning power forward who has the potential to be really good when he cares, will prob be some teams who need to hit the cap floor and would be willing to take a gamble on someone like him, etc.

e.g. http://www.capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=16

someone will pay him, imo. can't see him going for less than $3m/year unless he really just wants to stay in LA and will do anything to make it happen. think if he goes to market he'll likely get some stupid offers that will overpay him once again.

Jets, this last week, sign Jim Slater (3@1.5, up from 1.1), hire Perry Pearn for undetermined job.

i was impressed with how effective those Jets plugs (Slater, Stapleton, Glass, etc) were at times last year. didn't watch enough to have any idea how good they are exactly, but Slater prob a good signing there.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

Penner could get $4-5m easy on the open market and probably more. As 72 said, a discount for the Kings is probably to re-sign for roughly what he makes now.

ya, i dont know how feasible it is. The situation just reminds me of the giants and pablo sandoval (different sport but similar situation). He was under contract so it was a little different, but he was 280 pounds and so they basically said to lose 40 pounds or youll be buried in the minors. He ended up doing it and has been really good ever since. Anyway, i suppose its different when people are under contract, so meh, probably stupid to bring it up. I guess what im saying it I wouldnt pay that kinda of money unless I was one of those teams trying to reach the salary floor. Im guessing for contenders like the kings there would prob be better options for 3m, but i have to look into it.

i mean penner did score like no goals this year, i think $4M for him is pushing it on anything more than a one year deal.

Looking at his numbers you might be right. I didn't think his stats were quite that bad.

I heard the guys at Illegal Curve bemoaning their Corsi or Fenwick numbers, but Glass, Slater, Thorburn were pretty effective eating up hard minutes. I would guess the poor numbers were from getting trapped in their own zone a lot, for extended periods of time, which I think had to do with defensive players.

Stapleton has an unexpected powerful shot.

There's not too much out there to get in UFAs. I hope they get Glass signed.

7 goals and 10 assists in the reg and 3 goals and 8 assists in the playoffs. I admit thats not what we wanted out of him.
He had 32 goals in 09-10 with the oil stains, 21 in 10-11.
there is some potential, its about how much the gamble is worth. It took him being booed by fans and Sutter calling him horse**** to get his game together. His three goals in the playoffs isnt very impressive, but he had a lot of assists and intangibles going for him and was in beastmode when we needed him. I guess I'm torn. I'm sure the money could be better spent elsewhere but there is also the chance he is is refreshed and will be great next year.

I drove to PHX for all 3 games there and it was so nuts to see him bury the goal that got us the Campbell. Literally all reg season just mutterd "****in Penner" everytime he had the puck, and here he is giving me something I havent had since I was 12. Bananas

So either the Islanders are pretty much a 6th tier team, or the Canadiens are the best team.

Puck Daddy article

How is this not tampering, btw? Seems increddddddibly shady.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

Penner had a lot of **** go down this year. Divorce, multiple injuries. But he got worlds better once Sutter came in. Plus he's in much better shape than when he came from Edm.
I think he legitimately wants to stay in Cali. I think he regrets the Edm offer sheet.
I don't think anyone is going to give him a 4 year 16M deal. Maybe his best option is 1 year on the best 2nd line in hockey. Score 20+ and raise his value.
I wouldn't be shocked if he signed one year 3.? or 2 year 6.?

Also, Kings fans are starting to bug me.
They all think now that Parise is going to sign with the KANGZ for a discount. Sure, Lombardi is going to sign another 6M forward. And Quick is going to sign for 3 yrs 10M.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

yeah i mentioned a while back that my $ecret $ource (lol) told me that the Wild had a line on Suter, so i wouldn't be totally surprised if he and Parise made a pact to take their talents to Lake Minnetonka. think Minny will give it their best chance anyway. about time they tried something given the support they get there, build around a couple real American heroes.

but yeah, Parise could just as easily re-up in NJ, and Suter could stay in Nashville or go to Detroit or w/e, or knows...

re: tampering

yeah idk what the rules are there. Wilson or Burke said something like that about the Sedins a couple years and the league basically said "lol tampering".

hmm, ok. guess they're going with Lindback/Tokarski, or are they still in the Luongo derby and the loser between the kids will play in the AHL?

yeah hard to pin value on young goalies. been through it all with Schneider already, you never know how they're valued around the league.

and i mean, it's like trying to evaluate the trade market. i have ppl telling me that Florida (for example) isn't interested in Luongo bc they have Markström as their goalie of the future. dude has appeared in 8 NHL games, i don't think they're set on him being the savior just yet. so maybe they would make that trade and use him in a CS role for the next couple years and see how good he really is. assuming you can just run with an unproven #1 is a recipe for disaster, and i doubt most good hockey ppl would bother falling into that trap.

agree. i think he's one of the very few difference-making wingers in the league. every team should hope he makes it to July 1st.

Yes.

I know Parise is great. I just think we can do without the cap hit. The kings def had scoring issues this season, but I think the lines we have now will be solid if the fire on all cylinders. Add in prospects like Cliche, Toffoli and Lokti (if he can get his **** together) and you have a team that can do without Parise.

Am I bummed if we get him? Not at all, I'd be psyched even. But acquiring him isn't a high priority of mine.

He's gonna stay in N.J. anyways.
