I actually remember a decent amount of the '93 Jays World Series, about as much as you can reasonably expect a 5-year old to remember.

But truthfully, as I've said many times in our community, my earliest big sports moment that I remember vividly was the '94 Flames-Canucks series, and I think that more or less set the tone for the last two decades of my sports life. What an awful introduction to diehard fandom.

Re: Bettman Lockout III Thread (aka NHL Offseason: Now & Forever)

well ... it was a great series!

but yeah choking away that 3-1 series lead was prob a downer for you, esp considering the way the sea sorta parted as the playoffs went on. actually you likely would have enjoyed a Flames-Leafs CCF too!

anyway, hope ppl who have teams that actually win things appreciate it...

Same. Anyone who claims to love their children wouldn't put them through that.

Was that before or after Fleury sliding after scoring on the Oilers? A top ten hockey memory for me, and I don't care about either team.

Edit

I just looked it up and it was 91. Old people itt.

So whaddya guys think, is this just a meaningless hiccup on the way to an inevitable settlement or are we in real danger of losing the entire season?

No reason for them to negotiate for the next 2 weeks, so I expect a lot of this.

So you still think 90-95% or WE that we have a season at some point?

would still bet on 90%, sure. and there's no reason because the NHL wants a 48 game season and that can start as late as January 15th. So with the next drop dead date a month away, who's going to move off their position now?

Ok thanks. I'm a bit surprised that you are still that confident but good to hear I guess.

I thought I heard that the NHLPA has been dissolved and all the players are suing the NHL on their own? Sounds like a season is hopeless this year, and probably for the next 2-3 years as well.

Yeah I wish I could be as confident as Triumph. I mean if these guys are too smart too lose an entire season, then there is an argument to be made that they would be smart enough to reach an agreement before the season starts. And most importantly, these are the same parties who were stupid enough to blow up an entire season in the not too distant past. Given that, how anyone can be so sure it won't happen again is beyond me.

It's quite jarring when this turns out to not be true.

We do. It still kinda sneaks up on me that I'm part of this group.
I think it would lose some luster if it happened all the time. Like the Yankees or Red Wings. Only showing up for the playoffs, and even not then.
My last team to win anything was the 02 Angels. Then the '90 Reds. Once every 10 years seems good.

Here's a sign for you, the Official Winnipeg Jets App for the iPad was updated today.

The first championships I remember well were the '77-78 and '78-79 Avco Cups. And watching them on film at school, and then Mr. Betker running them back in high-speed reverse. And every kid determined to score a goal declaring, "OK, I'm Morris Lukowich."

The league is making money from this lockout. The more games they lose, the greater percentage of the season is made up of playoff games, and therefore more profit to those teams in the playoffs. This seems penny wise and pound foolish but who am I to argue?

Last time the players were taking about 70% of league revenues - they got cut down to 54%. This time they're going from 57% to 50%. Last time there was no salary cap, and the players aren't fighting that cap. It's a totally different fight.

This makes zero sense. Greater percentage of the season is in the playoffs sure, but more profit overall? What is this, some kind of voodoo math?

Teams make a lot more money per game for playoff games than regular season games. Players don't get paid for playoff games and seat prices are jacked way up.

You're missing the point. Losing several months of the regular season is costing everyone involved money. A lost regular season game costs less than a lost PO game but nevertheless costs money which is why the statement:

"The league is making money from this lockout."

makes no sense.

I mean you can understand that obviously that the league would be making more money than the team, if this lockout ends, due to playoffs and stuff.

But you're right, how is this league making money if there are no games to be played for now? And how can the league make more money if the lockout ends and you get a condensed schedule? I don't think that after all of this is said and done that the league would make more profit on this lockout than the previous full season year.
