I'm not being facetious here - it's good to see you post this. I think some of us from the more old school camp have felt over the last while that the variance discussion gets slightly too hyperbolic at times or takes over the narrative completely; when we see things like "running hot," our immediate reaction is defensive, for better or worse.
fwiw, I've heard the following opinion stated repeatedly: "according to Badgers players and fans, he's better than Gardiner." And I think the world of Jake Gardiner's skillset. If that's all his ceiling was, he'll be a damn good blueliner in this league, imo.
