Sylar,

Your grandfather sounds badass. If I ever get a job in your goddamn city (or any city), I'll be sure to donate.

Sylar,

Good story, your grandpa sounds awesome. Did he tell any WWII stories? Given how crazy the Eastern Front, and just the Red Army, was I'm sure he went through a lot.

this is what life is all about. Touching story sylar. Grandfathers were so badass back in the day. We could all use many lessons from them.

The bottom half of your face looks very Russian.

thanks guys. my grandfather never told any army or war stories, but i did meet some of his veteran friends during may 9th victory day demonstrations. from what i understand, he was never in action, long distance artillery was usually just a bit off the front-lines. he was deployed around moscow right around the time when the germans were closest to it, about 20km. they were preparing for a fight for the city, but it never came. moscow winter and constant skirmishes with resistance ruined any chance that hitler could knock out the capital. in a few months, the germans were driven back hundreds of miles. my grandfather stayed with the military after the war, but he spent his days running tests in manufacturing of cannons. the soviets had their own military-industrial complex.

sylar,

great post. been reading solzhenistsyn's 'gulag archipelago', it's incredible what people of that era went through - both during the war and after. i don't know how people who went through that kept up their spirits - your grandfather sounds like an amazing man.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly issued the following statement regarding the two days of meetings that concluded today with representatives of the NHL Players’ Association under the auspices of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service:

"Today, we concluded two days of mediation with FMCS mediators and representatives of the NHL Players' Association. After spending several hours with both sides over two days, the presiding mediators concluded that the parties remained far apart, and that no progress toward a resolution could be made through further mediation at this point in time. We are disappointed that the mediation process was not successful."
****, time for the AHL to become the professional league.

The Russian hockey players are lazy/weak/whatever stereotypes are funny to me, because they fly in the face of everything I think I know about Russia. That place seems pretty difficult to grow up in normally, but throw in living through WWII, or the transition from communism to capitalism-ish, or just living in the cold, and they sound pretty goddamn badass to me (Alex Karpotsev excluded, of course).

I liked your story about discussing math problems Sylar. I studied math in college, and had one of the most Russian math professors ever (Vasily Dolgushev represent), and he told similar stories. It seemed so foreign to me, and it was something that I wish I experienced growing up as a little math nerd.

The NHL is so ****ing pathetic man. Pickup the phone, call Mark Cuban, pay him $25,000,000 to draw up a decent plan and give you tips on how to better your product in the future.

Yeah, a punch is thrown here and basically you have parents trying to get on the ice. The officials are so nonchalant when a fight breaks out in this video. Quite funny.

Love how there is like 10 kids and then like 15 in the penalty box at once. But the white team is really dirty and basically started every fight.

Previous NHL Salary caps: min team like 16million less.
2011-12: $64.3 million
2010-11: $59.4 million
2009-10: $56.8 million
2008-09: $56.7 million
2007-08: $50.3 million
2006-07: $44 million
2005-06: $39 million

When salaries paid out have gone up so much how the **** can't you make a deal.

Fehr convinced them less then 57% was giving something back...Fehr should have put the whole thing in context but either way everyone is making more money then before...

Not making a deal before this season started is like the titanic sinking...that big of **** up...fire them both...

I agree with other guy...Make them listen to Mark Cuban telling them their idiots for 15 minutes on TV and a deal would get done.

the first thing mark cuban, aka "shrewd businessman", would do as the all-powerful commish is cut about 25 games of the season. there's a reason the owners were fine unanimously missing the first 2 months. early season doesn't move their profits that much.

of course i'll remember.

however, if it comes down to you vs geddy in the final again, i think you should settle it like men. or at the very least like poor graduate students.

10 minutes, 5 bowls of ramen noodles each. first one to finish without throwing up wins.

You might want to include some other numbers to put this into context. Start with dollar value of the NHL franchises, stuff like that.
