iirc, Triumph said it was at least a step in the right direction and it might do something but he thought it was still "very lol" or something like that.

lol wat, might wanna check Calgary's growth over the last decade.

Calgary's turning into Toronto West and it'll continue so long as there's steam from the oil boom. It's a major Canadian market now.

Also, wrt which owners are leading the charge on this lockout, it really has to be anyone's guess at this point. I read this today that pretty much says it's Bettman and JJ running the whole show:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl-l...wners_silence/

Quote:
Worse is the perception that only three people control all the power and information when it comes to the future of the NHL, that a new deal hinges solely on Bettman, Bob Batterman (lead counsel for the NHL) and Jeremy Jacobs (Boston Bruins owner and chairman of the NHL board). Everyone else is on the outside looking in when it comes to power in the league.

Ask many NHL owners outside of this small circle and if they answer truthfully they'll tell you they know as much of what's going on as you or me. Some teams will also tell you a two- to three-year slope toward 50/50 split works just fine, and to potentially burn the whole village down in an effort to keep fighting for teams like Phoenix and Florida is just plain wrong.
Quote:
In 2004, it was understood that all the owners were willing to burn a whole season because they knew exactly what they wanted: a hard salary cap linked to revenues. In 2012, the owners' stance isn't as clear because the wants and needs of each club differ. What's even murkier is 30 teams' willingness to go all the way in achieving whatever Bettman, Batterman and Jacobs think they need to get a CBA win.

Agreed, and it's still only the second most valuable franchise in Alberta.

Although sylar does have a point. Maybe they should relocate a team like Winnipeg to a bigger city like Atlanta?

you're not making sense. that was in the owners' offer to the players. the idea is that those teams will not take a 'bad deal' - they are not blocking any deal.

Quote:
also it's pretty lol if we're at this point and a big problem is that the owners still haven't agreed amongst themselves what kind of deal they want to get here. like shouldn't that part have been settled a long time ago?
It was settled long ago - small market teams will get nothing but a pittance, big market teams (since they are driving this) will get more. I do not believe that those owners will block a potential deal any more than I believed that malarkey about the NBA - if Friedman had even mentioned a source for that information, I would immediately disregard that comment as posturing, much as what happened in the NBA.

What TJay said. Why count now? Wait until the end of the season. Fights will probably be down, but the mechanism is very lol - it should be incumbent on the teams. The players by fighting are just doing what they think their coaches and GM want.

Re: Bettman Lockout III Thread (aka NHL Offseason: Now & Forever)

In other hockey news, lol CHLPA...

Quote:
Canadian hockey officials are probing the identity of a key figure behind efforts to unionize the country’s junior hockey players.

Derek Clarke is the spokesman for the fledgling Canadian Hockey League Players Association (CHLPA) that has made headlines advocating for the unionization of 1,300 young men in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL).

Although Clarke has been widely interviewed by media and spoken with hockey officials by phone, few have ever met the man in person.

His background and history seems largely a mystery.

One NHLer who has met Clarke is retired Montreal Canadiens forward Georges Laraque, the public face and executive director of the CHLPA.

Many in the hockey community believe Clarke, in fact, is Randy Gumbley, a former hockey coach convicted of two counts of fraud.

In an on-camera interview with TVA sports reporter Stephane Gonzalez Wednesday, Laraque identified a photograph of Gumbley, saying it was Derek Clarke. Then, in a subsequent interview, he denied the two were the same man.

Re: Bettman Lockout III Thread (aka NHL Offseason: Now & Forever)

The new fighting rules and all the concussion articles and media-hype from last year definitely are having an effect. The 3-minute-a-game enforcer-goon type of player is increasingly a but of a dinosaur.

Just 2 days ago was interviewing a player who made it to the NHL strictly in that kind of capacity. The "dinosaur" line comes from him...without me having brought it up. The game is continuing to change and evolve. The fighting won't go away forever. But the rules for engagement are way different now.

Hell, we had a game last week with a dirty hit followed by a guy stepping up to fight him. Nothing at all nasty about the fight. No blindsiding or anything. Step up to him quickly and the guy who had the 5-minute boarding major immediately responded and they dropped the gloves. But that guy got a 2 minute instigation penalty...that almost never would have been given before....even last year.

I don't know about the NHL necessarily, but the AHL and juniors I'm pretty sure that fighting now is less than it was 5 years ago which was less than it was 5 years before that.

To reminisce about the good old days, here's a nice bench-clear from the minor leagues in 2004

And one from the NHL from the even older good old days:

Re: Bettman Lockout III Thread (aka NHL Offseason: Now & Forever)

Guys are in different areas doing whatever training they can or want to. I know they had something going on in L.A. during the summer with a couple of NHL coaches and a bunch of players ranging from NHL'ers like Sidney Crosby to minor league guys.

Maybe he just has a couple buds there and is chilling (and working out and skating, etc). Ontario's arena is pretty new. Nice facility there...I'm guessing it's the best (or one of) in the western conference of that league.

Hater. I'm about 10 minutes from that stadium.

Of all ECHL teams, he could have done worse. It's not Bakersfield or Stockton, for sure.

Well they did spend to the cap, and still had a few personnel buyouts on their hands, and bought the Calgary Stampeders last year, so that might have something to do with it. 10th in revenues, cracking 9 figures, just behind the Pens and Flyers.

Not really sure that I'm thrilled about the Flames becoming MLSE West, but at least they're not going anywhere. Now, about that antiquated arena...
