All right, I'm looking at this mascot list, and its pretty tough to top that octopus story, that's pretty damn awesome, and of course, because of city-biasness and seven-year fanness, I am fan of Bailey. That dude is awesome throughout the home games.

Re: Bettman Lockout III Thread (aka NHL Offseason: Now & Forever)

Youppi is ****ing legit though! There's a difference in taking a mascot from the legendary Expos who were unfairly relocated, and moving him to the even more legendary Canadiens; than taking the mascot from your ARENA FOOTBALL LEAGUE team in NYC... probably the 14th or 15th rate pro team in the city, and moving it to the... 9th rate pro team in the city.

Youppi's number is !

Youppi means like "Woo hoo!" in French!

I'd really be down for someone to run NHL 13 sim every day to give us results and do the season that way.

How were the Expos unfairly taken out of Montreal? I wanted the team to survive too but attendance was completely hideous.

Not saying I disagree, but listening to Spaceman Lee talk about Loria's involvement leading up to their demise is interesting to say the least.

Octopus tradition legit WOAT in sports although I do like thinking about times when the Wings got shut out and some poor schmuck had to carry an octopus for 3 periods

Rats though. At least for a year.

Also, adopting a iconic mascot because the local MLB team moved away is worlds different from sharing a mascot used by (and named for) the local Arena Football Team.

edit: I see goose wrote this too. That's what I get for skimming the thread.

What is going on in here? Rats and octopi are two of the greatest things in sports.

Re: Bettman Lockout III Thread (aka NHL Offseason: Now & Forever)

panthers fans still bring the rats, it's just that they aren't supposed to be thrown until the end of the game. apparently someone wasn't paying attention to the panthers-devils series where panthers fans were delaying the game by throwing rats on to the ice, which led security to ban rats from game 7.

I just watched the video, hah. I totally missed that when it happened, so you can now use me in your 'nobody cares about the Devils' narrative when/if hockey ever comes back.

And tjay, I can understand the octopus, and I even find the catfish in Nashville oddly hilarious, but the rats are just stupid. They were a lot stupider in 96 though, when it would happen mid-game and take 10 minutes to clean up.

Re: Bettman Lockout III Thread (aka NHL Offseason: Now & Forever)

I like the octopi, personally. And this is from a self-professed Wangz hater.

The year the Canucks went to the SCF and they beat us in the 'Dome in a meaningless game 82, after Karlsson let one in from like 45 feet out and some BC hippy threw a Pacific salmon onto the ice as a celly...that one legit made my blood boil for whatever reason. Just salt in the wounds to end a disaster of a season I guess.

Nail Yakupov is getting his oiler career underway during this lockout, by experiencing first hand what's it like to bust your ass every game for a bottom-dweller like Nizhnekamsk.

Why wait until they're 8 wins away? Just throw a millipede on the ice now!

yeah i remember reading a bunch of stuff way back when, and they got a bit of a raw deal there, the owner was tanking / sandbagging it pretty hard. that was obviously a profitable play for him, and he possibly even had MLB approval given moving the team to Washington is +EV for basically everyone except Montreal.

having been through it once myself as a sports fan, i get the feeling there's pretty much always a lot more to the story when a team moves, and some shady [censored] that goes down to ensure it happens.
