Holmgren has generally been okay with the cap though. Outside Bryzgalov, the Richards, Giroux, Carter deals were all fine. Briere was their big play coming out of the lockout, and Pronger was their push to win now. That deal would have turned bad but I think he's done a decent enough job. When the owner comes out and says the team will "never" go through goalie struggles again, I don't think it's much of a coincidence they get one a few weeks later. Sucks that Richards and Carter had to be moved, but we luckboxed Couturier and they're gonna get their RANG now anyway.

The return for those two was fine, particularly in the fact that it included good, young talent who will be cheap for a few years to come. The problem is going to be in a few years when Giroux, Schenn, and Couturier's contracts are up and Bryzgalov is chilling with his $5.67M number.

starting from this summer, I challenge you to find a worse run organization in the NHL than the Flyers

Holmgren has no regard for how to run a franchise in a salary-capped NHL

I'm guessing those are quotes from me, and I was a bit irked. I hadn't really stomached that Bryzgalov came from the owner so there wasn't much he could do about it. We also didn't know the Flyers would luckbox Couturier at the time which is really what made the trades okay.

the funny thing about flyers FA dealings last year is that they could have had Vokoun for approximately 40-50% of Bryz' salary/years. but once again they outbid themselves. just like with Jagr.

Just wanted to say the following...we're all guilty of a couple things here: a) being far too hyperbolic in our statements and b) puffing out the internet chest to make our points. It's the nature of this forum. I don't think we should hold that against each other in these discussions.

I'm going to write more about this for NHLNumbers, but if you want to talk about those trades we should talk about Brayden Schenn. He had some moments this year but I really wasn't blown away with him. He's still very young and I think he suffered from the hype machine a bit too much but the Flyers are going to need him to gear it up next year. Definitely not 'the next Richards' which is what everyone seemed to be saying after the trade. At least not yet.

Peace Renney. Not sure who I want next? Tambo made sutter sound like the current favourite, but that they were very open to think about it.

Dunno who I want. Sutter has proven to be awesome when given talented youth...

TJay as an Oiler fan would you rather you guys draft Murray or Yakupov say you were to keep you pick as it is?

I'm in Thailand so I havent been able to watch any hockey in like 2 weeks, how did Murray look at the WC?

Murray looked incredible at the WJC. I also just watched Reinhart in an entire playoff run, and maybe it's because he was playing with Pysyk, but he looked like an NHL quality dman. So many blocked shots and sticks in lanes. He played damn near perfect. And he's huge. It's a coinflip who the better dman in 5 years is.

That said, they're both Dmen. And if you look at Dmen that go in the top 10 or top 5 in the last 10 years, they rarely pan out.

Look at forwards that go in to the top 5 and they almost always end up as some sort of NHLer.

If we pick first, I take Yakupov just because there is such a good thing going on here, and you don't want any chance of a dud. We need more assets. Having too many young skilled franchise forwards are never an issue. That's the player every team wants. It's like a wild card you can trade for anything.

We're probably not winning the 2013 Stanley Cup, so why worry about defence right now? Take the highest "equity" play, and then trust in the GMs skills to get the team balanced come 2014/2015, or even late 2013 if a run emerges.

- Milan Hejduk re-ups for 1 more year @ $2m

from Puck Daddy: Hejduk elected to give it one more shot, especially since he's only nine games away from reaching 1,000 for his career...Hejduk ranks fourth in goals (371) and fifth in assists (423) in franchise history. What's more, his 794 career points trail only Jaromir Jagr (1,653) and Patrik Elias (894) among Czech-born players who have suited up in the NHL.

- agreement reached for the arena deal in Seattle, that may or may not include getting a hockey team

http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/agre...ZP8XcAnxMJfwM6

- from Pro Hockey Talk: Shea Weber called the incident a “distraction” and “unfortunate.” When asked by host Bob Marjanovich about being part of the Nashville leadership group that asked GM David Poile to bring Radulov back from the KHL, Weber replied:

“I don’t really know what to say about it because I was one of the guys that stood up for him and wanted him back. There were a bunch of us that played with him that felt the same way.

“You feel a little bit betrayed, but I am sure he feels bad about it now and he looks back on it and wishes it didn’t happen. Those are the things you can’t take back and we’ve got to move forward.”

I'm not a fan of Alan Walsh. I don't believe it either fwiw. If GM's are cancelling it, they are probably poor teams and are using the CBA negotiations as an excuse when its really a monetary matter.

Spacek talks HABZ

Quote:
Off the record over lunch, Spacek chronicled in detail an alarmingly dysfunctional Habs hockey-operations unit that, alongside a ridiculous number of injuries, played a starring role in the team’s rock-bottom finish.

More broadly, he repeated the words spoken by more than one Habs teammate: there was virtually no management communication with players, the club’s style of play seldom suited the roster, and mind-numbingly bizarre rules were legislated, these childish regulations unchanged even after the pleading of veteran leaders.

“So much bad stuff,” Spacek said. “In my 20-year hockey career, I’d never seen anything like it. If you don’t like the way I play, kick me in the ass. But no one said anything. It was terrible.

...
“And who knows?” he said. “I might show up back with the Canadiens.”

His trademark grin of mischief spread. And then, as he drained his stein: “Just kidding!”

But it all came to an end, as the Homer Simpson boxing approach to hockey finally ran out of luck when the Coyotes came up against the Drederick Tatum of the Western Conference in the Kings. The extra fluid padding the brain -- known as Mike Smith -- that let the rest of the Yotes pretty much get pummeled for large portions of the playoffs without a knockout finally succumbed.

Maybe the lasting memory will be somehow letting Jeff Carter score a playoff hat trick. It's as if Bullwinkle finally got that rabbit out of his hat, if Bullwinkle were a frosted-tipped, blond-chasing douchebag. Actually, that works, just because it's so funny to picture Mike Richards as Rocky.

Alain Vigneault gets a 2-year extension from the Canucks, had 1-year remaining. not exactly a ringing endorsement, but at least he's not going to be a lame duck, or didn't just get a nearly as lame 1-year extension. but this kinda feels like the same thing, not exactly a great commitment to him going forward (but of course the mouthbreathers here wouldn't stand for that either). so probably about the right contract i guess. if things don't work out much better next year they can still walk away pretty easily.

Q: You’ve heard the story about Mike Cammalleri asking for his Habs jersey, upon being traded, and being told he could have it if he paid for it. What about your jersey?

A: I didn’t take mine when I was traded. But I saw Geoff Molson three weeks ago at a hockey tournament – our sons play in the same organization – and he asked me, “Did you ever get your game-worn jersey?” I told him no and he said he’d take care of it. Three days later, a courier showed up at my home with my jersey and a nice note from Geoff.

Q: No second thoughts about having signed to play in Montreal instead of elsewhere, being an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2009?

A: I would never change it. I had two options – here or Phoenix. I liked both. To be honest, Phoenix was faxing me a contract already, for three years, but then Bob (Gainey) came back and made me an offer and I always wanted to stay in the East.

Q: One enduring memory of your time as a Canadien?
