Holmgren has generally been okay with the cap though. Outside Bryzgalov, the Richards, Giroux, Carter deals were all fine. Briere was their big play coming out of the lockout, and Pronger was their push to win now. That deal would have turned bad but I think he's done a decent enough job. When the owner comes out and says the team will "never" go through goalie struggles again, I don't think it's much of a coincidence they get one a few weeks later. Sucks that Richards and Carter had to be moved, but we luckboxed Couturier and they're gonna get their RANG now anyway.

The return for those two was fine, particularly in the fact that it included good, young talent who will be cheap for a few years to come. The problem is going to be in a few years when Giroux, Schenn, and Couturier's contracts are up and Bryzgalov is chilling with his $5.67M number.

I'm guessing those are quotes from me, and I was a bit irked. I hadn't really stomached that Bryzgalov came from the owner so there wasn't much he could do about it. We also didn't know the Flyers would luckbox Couturier at the time which is really what made the trades okay.

the funny thing about flyers FA dealings last year is that they could have had Vokoun for approximately 40-50% of Bryz' salary/years. but once again they outbid themselves. just like with Jagr.

Just wanted to say the following...we're all guilty of a couple things here: a) being far too hyperbolic in our statements and b) puffing out the internet chest to make our points. It's the nature of this forum. I don't think we should hold that against each other in these discussions.

I'm going to write more about this for NHLNumbers, but if you want to talk about those trades we should talk about Brayden Schenn. He had some moments this year but I really wasn't blown away with him. He's still very young and I think he suffered from the hype machine a bit too much but the Flyers are going to need him to gear it up next year. Definitely not 'the next Richards' which is what everyone seemed to be saying after the trade. At least not yet.

Murray looked incredible at the WJC. I also just watched Reinhart in an entire playoff run, and maybe it's because he was playing with Pysyk, but he looked like an NHL quality dman. So many blocked shots and sticks in lanes. He played damn near perfect. And he's huge. It's a coinflip who the better dman in 5 years is.

That said, they're both Dmen. And if you look at Dmen that go in the top 10 or top 5 in the last 10 years, they rarely pan out.

Look at forwards that go in to the top 5 and they almost always end up as some sort of NHLer.

If we pick first, I take Yakupov just because there is such a good thing going on here, and you don't want any chance of a dud. We need more assets. Having too many young skilled franchise forwards are never an issue. That's the player every team wants. It's like a wild card you can trade for anything.

We're probably not winning the 2013 Stanley Cup, so why worry about defence right now? Take the highest "equity" play, and then trust in the GMs skills to get the team balanced come 2014/2015, or even late 2013 if a run emerges.

Alain Vigneault gets a 2-year extension from the Canucks, had 1-year remaining. not exactly a ringing endorsement, but at least he's not going to be a lame duck, or didn't just get a nearly as lame 1-year extension. but this kinda feels like the same thing, not exactly a great commitment to him going forward (but of course the mouthbreathers here wouldn't stand for that either). so probably about the right contract i guess. if things don't work out much better next year they can still walk away pretty easily.
