I think it's about time to stop counting UFA years as if they are written in stone anymore because they're not. Turris showed he can beat soft competition last year, I guess this contract is okay but I think it's a little risky to sign a guy like this for 5 years.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

I'm not of fan of eller myself, i've called him out here multiple times. He hangs on to the puck way to long, any remote semblance of success gets to his head, he's a bit dangly-dangly fancy pants and doesnt capitalize on opportunities nearly enough.

The good news is though he's not signed to that horrendous contract. Turris might or might not earn that contract in the next 5 years. I just think its way premature.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

The same way Taylor Hall's contract seems way risky. One, he's injury prone. Two, he's a good player but i doubt at any moment in time 6m is going to be a significant discount for his production. I don't see him as a O8, Crosby nor Stamkos first pick type of talent.

All in all, I feel exposing yourself to 7 years of liablity for an unlikely discount is not sound. Then again, players like Erhoff, Parise and Suter have been signed to delusional contracts so who knows...

Even after all that, if you prorate their seasons for 82 games, Turris would have only 1 more goal than Eller.

Top Linemates

Eller - Moen, A.Kostitsyn, Leblanc
Turris - Alfredsson, Foligno, Condra, Greening

Quote:
against worse competition
Top Opponents

Eller - Gonchar, Cowen, Ehrhoff, Seidenberg, McQuaid
Turris - Seidenberg, Corvo, Streit, Carle, St.Louis

re: qualcomp, qualteam, corsi, etc

you can run the numbers and let me know

Quote:
and started in the offensive zone more than Eller
Zone start

Eller - 48.3%
Turris - 52%

Quote:

PDO

Eller - 988 (while shooting 12.4% personally)
Turris - 1017 (while shooting 8.5% personally)

Save %

Montreal - .916
Ottawa - .911

Quote:
Turris also got 3x more powerplay time.
PP time

Eller - 52 min
Turris - 99 min

PP points 5-3 Turris last year

Quote:

assists tho, kinda important for a center...

counting the Phoenix games again, Turris pro-rates to 14 more points based on last season

maybe Eller's PDO was low bc he can't make plays? his career Cy Young line of 25g & 22a in 163gp is pretty atrocious.

(Turris has 31g & 44a in 186gp fwiw)

and they're about the same age, actually Turris is 3 months younger, if that matters at all...

Ovechkin makes 9M, Crosby 8.7, Stamkos 7.5, and Hall is 6. He's not making top-of-the-league superstar money as you seem to be implying.

Edmonton is also exposing themselves to less liability than Pittsburgh did with Crosby.

This is a growing trend with more NHL teams.

Old school way is to just focus on the players and make the reporters do the digging to figure out the salary numbers, etc. Now with sites like capgeek and everyone's twitter and basically everybody able to find out anyway it is perhaps a better idea for the teams themselves to just take charge of publicizing this on their own. Beat them to the punch in other words.

I'm not implying he makes that kind of money, i'm saying he's not the kind of talent you give 42m to maybe get a discount down the road if he's still got a knee or a shoulder working properly.

Also known as "The Ontario Hockey Championships For Italians Who Can't Skate." A guy I played with at Mac played for a team out of Niagara Falls that won the Tier III OBHA's this year. 100% full-blooded Italian roster, no word of a lie.

When I started playing 4 years ago, I never thought we'd take it as seriously as we do now, but we've actually put together a pretty good team (for our tier) and it's fun to win and go on roadies to play other good clubs. It's a change of pace too from your average men's league on ice, so I've really grown fond of it. Hopefully you're not gonna look down on me for playing ball hockey in the summer instead of going 12 months in a row on the ice

What is the alternative, then? This contract is right in line with what comparable players of his age have been signing for.

I don't think "skate to the face" is a recurring injury.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

Signing hall is a slight gamble because of his injuries, but two seasons is a small sample size. Skate to the face was a randy johnson vs bird random event, and the shoulder was from a junior injury that has since had surgery. Yes he plays a completely reckless style where he ends up on his ass 12 times a game, but those plays haven't led to any of his injuries (knock on wood).

The beauty of the Hall deal, is that it sets the bar for Eberle, Nuge, and Yakupov to follow. Put the salary cap anywhere between 58 and 70 million after these CBA negotiations, and then show me any GM that wouldn't want to build a team around that core of 4 players for 24 million. That leaves 30-45 million to still play with.

They just showed the other 3 youngin's and their agents that they are willing to commit to this core right now.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

I'm not sure i mentioned any freak injuries, I was moreso hinting to the various knee/shoulder injuries he's suffered. He did miss 16 & 21 games in his first two seasons. Not astonishing by any means, but I feel like knees and shoulders have higher risk of reinjury.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

Also worth mentioning:

My softball team won our semifinal series tonight, but between Labor Day and some weird scheduling, we don't start the final series for 12 days.

I was gonna post this in the softball thread, but they wouldn't understand/appreciate the playoff beard implications of a 12 day break at this point in the playoffs.
