Nothing official yet, but the twitter rumor mill is saying McLellan is likely staying in SJ next year.

lol, you are kidding right? makarov/fetisov/mogilny/kasparaitis all had a huge cloud over them, and some of them were already all-time international greats, and that was when drinking the night before a game was the norm.

like i said, the next russian who gets drafted or signed is automatically 'the next radulov' or 'the next semin' until proven otherwise. noone ever asks if the next ontrario prospect is 'the next wet island', or 'the next guy who punches a cab driver', or 'the next guy who beds a teammate's/brother-in-law's wife'.

ETA: or worse yet, 'the next brad marchand/rene bourque/rafi torres/matt cooke'!

gmafb!

So the same guys who reported the incident to the team wouldn't have made a stir if nobody was suspended. It was Trotz and Poile's fault here.

Yes, 72. "Wet Island" got Richards and Carter traded. It wasn't the fact that the team was up against the cap and those were the two assets that they could garner maximum fair value from in a trade, albeit to waste the cap space on Bryzgalov (as dictated by the owner).

Nah, it was definitely that they were bad leaders and drunks and stuff that the team directly said themselves. Mind finding me some of those quotes from Flyers management?

The work the Canadian media has done on you guys is truly mind-boggling.

Dumbest thing said in this whole discussion was by sylar, comparing Rene Bourque to Matt Cooke/Brad Marchand/Rafi Torres.

cwice continuously white-knighting for his two favorite players is definitely one of the more entertaining subplots of this discussion

He is correct here, though. It was Paul Holmgren's masterful management of the salary cap coupled with Snider's insatiable need for an 'elite' goalie that sent Richards/Carter packing, not any off-ice bs.

This is a pretty lazy take on a generalization only believed by morons like Cherry. Unless that's your point.

For an example from the last couple weeks, many are blowing Kovy left and right for playing with his bad back.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

Wasn't there a big story last year or the year before about a divide in the room between Richards and Pronger?

Pronger, right after the trade in June:

Quote:
Q: Were you able to reach out to Jeff or Mike?

I’m going to give them a call today. Having gone through it a number of times, you kind of need a day to gather your thoughts and kind of get your wits about you. It’s certainly not an easy thing. I think it makes it a little bit easier that they’re both single and don’t have to lug around kids and logistically and that stuff, but it’s still very tough to be traded and I’m sure both of them have mixed emotions.”
Richards, in October:

Quote:
Yet another rumor that surrounded this trade was that newly appointed Flyers captain Chris Pronger had something to do with Richards getting the boot. When Cabbie asked Richards about this, he didn't sound so assured that Pronger didn't have anything to do with him leaving Philadelphia.

"I'm not sure if Chris had any persuasion on me getting traded. I would like to think not because I would consider Chris actually pretty good friend. Over the last couple of years [we were] throwing lots of things off of each other ... going within two games of the Stanley Cup two years ago and he actually lives an hour and a half away from me here in Kenora and so I would like to consider us friends.

“I'm not sure if there is any truth to those rumors I would like to think not but just another one of those things where it gets blown out of proportion and it's a story so every beat writer and every camera in Philadelphia is going to try and get their scoop on it."

Richards certainly didn't put a quash on this rumor, adding that Pronger hasn't reached out to him since the season ended.

"No, I have not [heard from Pronger].
I think he's been going through stuff with his back and I had my hand so we just haven't gotten around to it."

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

Hey goofy, guess what else was right before the trade in June?

Quote:
Told that the fan base was lamenting the need for a true No. 1 goalie for a few decades, Snider fired back, "I want one, too."

He paused.

"So either one of the goalies we have has to step up in training camp, or we have to make improvements to make sure it happens. But we are never going to go through the goalie issues we've gone through in the last couple of years."

[...]

"If we trade or go for a goalie [through free agency], we'll make it work," he said. "We can make anything work, even with the cap."
http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2011/5/1...ding-ed-snider

Also, I'm not sure what your point is posting that stuff. It's pointless to speculate about a possible divide or what may have caused it. If anything, it just furthers the two getting a pretty raw deal after taking the team within 2 wins of the Cup as that second article suggested. Regardless of whether management loved the two to death or wanted them out, who else on that roster could they have traded to clear enough space for Bryzgalov and at the same time get a return that wasn't negative value? Keep in mind that they had absolutely no cap room at the time. To make Bryzgalov work, it was always going to be one or both of Richards and Carter leaving Philadelphia, bar none. The rest of the crap is just bull**** stirred up by the media, which is exactly what both of those articles are.

Why, isn't that kind of what this discussion is about?

For the umpteenth time, the owner came out and said he wanted a goalie. The Flyers were up against the cap. The only two players who could return a fair amount of young talent and the cap space necessary to make such a move were Richards and Carter. Both could have been Churchgoing virgins who treated women with the WhiteGoose standard of care, but at the end of the day that's what the Flyers cap situation was. The fact that they were already disliked by Philadelphia media and common scapegoats of the fans wasn't going to help their portrayal.

Since we're putting so much value in quotes, why, according to Richards, did Pronger never call him? Could it be because players don't tell media the truth? Could it be that they were just using the quotes to write a story about a situation that developed behind closed doors, the causes of which they had no knowledge? Could it be that it went in line with their pre-formed narratives about partying, bad leadership, and disappearing in the playoffs?

Nah, those guys partied more than any other young 20s kid would and cost the team a Stanley Cup and were clearly traded because of it.
