Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

I'm sure Gary has feelings too, and it would upset him a little. The more and more pressure, the better. Plus, at the very least he would get severely trolled by media people asking him "Gary, how do you feel about FIRE BETTMAN trending #1 in the world?" Can you imagine him answering those questions? Amazing.

But I'd imagine the cap increase would only be for one season so it still would probably only help teams close to the cap plug a hole not sign superstars. So it could actually create some parity in the long run or at least help the worse teams get better a bit faster.

Haven't had any top 5 picks trade hands past couple years but a couple kind of close calls that were just a couple losses or lottery luck-box away from happening. And it did happen in 2010.

2012 - Pittsburgh drafts 8th, from Carolina
2011 - Philly drafts 8th (Sean Couturier), from Columbus from Jeff Carter deal.
2011 - Boston drafts 9th, from Toronto. Phil Kessel deal.
2011 - Colorado drafts 11th, from St. Louis, Shattenkirk/Stewart for Erik Johnson deal.
2010 - Boston drafts 2nd (Tyler Seguin), from Toronto. Also Phil Kessel deal.

For 2013: LA 1st round pick goes to Columbus. Columbus had option of LA 1st roun pick in 2012 or 2013. Columbus deferred to 2013.

NY Rangers 1st round pick goes to Columbus.

NJ has to forfeit a 1st roun pick in either 13 or 14 penalty on Kovalchuk and cap circumvention.

Wayne Simmonds has agreed to 6 year extension with PHI. Not sure on precise AAV but hearing it's around $4M per year.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

How long the lockout goes is really going to be interesting after the 2004 debacle. Both sides going to play hardball again? Sure feels possible. If they get their act together sometime before January 1 I'll be relatively happy about that. Not thrilled obviously...but better than some alternatives which I fear.

Some harder finger-pointing today and basically the two sides aren't even close.

And now Bettman and Fehr aren't even meeting again until next Wednesday. And, ummm, you're kind of running out of time on this crap.

Tick tick tick.

I thought a lockout was going to drive me nuts, but I stepped back and remembered that I waited for 15 years. I know how to function without hockey, it sucks, but I can bear it.

I was more referencing the potential "trade picks for cap space" idea. Most low ranked teams have plenty of cap space already, so why would they trade their lottery picks for cap space? The only team that comes to mind in the last while that might have is the 06/07 Flyers.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

I hope the lockout lasts 3-4 years and absolutely KILLS the NHL down to the point where only 12 teams survive, there's no salary cap and American TV wants nothing to do with it. CBC playing Hockey Night in Canada and the Toronto Maple Leafs with a better shot at the cup. Do it.

If there is a lockout, i hope the owners make the players actually go down to 46% instead of 50% and absolutely demoralize the union.

A one year lock out will severely crush players like 7uongo, kovalchuk, Pronger, Gomez etc who will lose out on a $10m season and up up bringing down their avg contract down substantially.

I hope they enjoy riding out their last years for peanuts.

i think kovalchuk will be fine if there's a one year lock out. he could make $10m in the khl while playing fewer games.

Honestly don't care if there's a lockout. 50 game season and playoffs if fine with me.

AHL and college hockey are going to be quite a bit more popular than normal in Oct or Nov.
