Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

Hiring Don Fehr was a curious choice if they wanted to avoid a lockout.

It's not incumbent upon them to want to avoid a lockout. A lockout is when owners refuse to let labor work under the present terms.

Furthermore, major league baseball hasn't missed a game since 1995.

It's not up to the players to acquiesce to ownership's demands - ownership are clearly on a course to start the season late unless the union gives in to demands that will seriously damage their earnings.

Fehr's proposal of starting the season under the present terms and keep negotiating a new CBA throughout the season isn't really an option though, because then it gives the NHLPA a ton of leverage if they threaten to cancel the playoffs, like they did with the World Series back in the days.

Selig learned not to mess with The Don.

Well yeah, the players have to do what's in their best interest, but I hope they don't expect any "normal citizen" working a 9 to 5 for $50K a year to shed a tear for them when they're asked to take a salary cut that would make the average salary go from $3M to $2.8M (no idea what the actual avg. salary is but it can't be that far off).

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

Fehr shoulda 3 bet there

Bettman: There will be a lockout and we will start late if there is no deal by sept 15.
Fehr: If we don't start on time, we aren't playing all year.

I believe the NHLPA has offered to continue playing under this CBA for several years. That may just be what they're saying in public, but I'd believe it.

They expect 'normal citizens' to get upset that they won't have hockey in October and they want people to blame it on the owners.

Owners: Fine, it's your own death warrant you're signing, since the CBA as it stands now has a linkage between league revenues and player salaries that isn't going away. Good luck going from a $3M salary to $100k in the Swiss League - you'll never get that money back, either.

That's why linkage was such a big deal and why they missed a season over it.

Canada-Russia Challenge. They're playing this on TSN2 right now. It's not live.

Monday and Tuesday are in Halifax.

not *that* terrible, a lot of the goalie picks are lolworthy. chelios at 15 and howe at 60 being too low, Modano at 37 seems high

the modern era draft was the GOAT draft ainec. not because the draft itself was goat, but because it was the tuning point for the hockey community in SE. The NHL threads really exploded after that draft.

I'm 100% in for some kind of draft/pool like a yahoo fantasy hockey thing, or just draft players for points or whatever.

(for the upcominh 2013-2014 season)
