I remember when Bill Guerin was almost on the Flyers. That was a cool time.

Daneyko and Foote sheeping is some serious run bad. No chance that I win now - time to swing for the fences. Or after looking at the questions, striking out miserably.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

Can someone tell me about Cheechoo, a player I missed completely in my absence. How does a guy go from Rocket Richard to AHL so quickly?

No one mentions him, unlike David Duval in golf.

[Also, did you notice the date of the Beliveau hat trick?]

Now that I've been released from the hospital, hells yes.

Most likely severe food poisoning that I'm fighting the tail end of, but the stool sample results will come back tomorrow so I'm off work until then. I was losing a lot of blood though so it freaked me out good.

****ing UK food, they are atrocious cooks. Every mangiacake stereotype I had instilled in me growing up in my Eastern European family was realized this week.

The league really struggled to adapt to the new rules coming out of the lockout - Cheechoo was the kind of guy who actually would've probably had a longer career in the old NHL, because he was slow as [censored]. Still, the old way of playing defense in front of the net was cross-checking a guy until he was on the ice - that was now illegal, and guys were figuring out how to play defense. Plus, Thornton got there about a third of the way through the season and from then on, Cheechoo was dynamite - in 58 games he scored 48 goals.

But Cheechoo had some injuries, defensemen figured out how to play in front of the net, power plays went way down, and Cheechoo was basically a guy who was useless from outside the circles - I don't think he was ever regarded as a good defensive player, and again, he was a poor skater, and the new name of the game was speed.

We've been over this before, but it's actually easier to explain than it may seem.

Short answer is Joe Thornton.

Longer answer/explanation is that cheechos skating is and always has been atrocious, and his main value was finishing ability. Thorntons style as a set up man suits cheecho perfectly, and not only does thorntons style mesh perfectly, but he plays that style at the level of a snap call, first ballot, hall of famer. that year cheecho was constantly getting fed candy apples by joe every game. Joe Thornton on his line that year (in 2006) probably would yield a higher average goal production from cheecho, than maybe anyone who has ever lived. Basically, cheecho that year coupled an elite finishing ability with a situation that was more than ideal.

Edit:ya Triumph, scary to think how many he would have had if JT was there the whole year.

Rules question, if a player gets taken down from behind on a clear breakaway with an EN, what's the ruling?

Thought about going Phillippe Boucher but wussed out at the last minute because I couldn't remember if he played in the Finals or not. Looks like he put in a solid 11 minutes in game 1.

Thought the last career game in the Cup Finals was a great question. There were a bunch of guys that came to mind that put in a **** year or two after playing there and should have retired - Roy, Gary Roberts, Nick Lidström etc.

Penalty shot infraction called with an empty net is a goal, yes.
