HAHAHA, YES! Scholastic book fairs FTMFW
So it would always operate as a two-day thing; on day 1, you'd get out of class, look at the selection and think about what you'd want to get. Then you'd go home, ask mom and dad for some skrilla and make the purchase on day 2.
I think I was around 8 when this happened, but I remember finding a book I wanted - hell, it probably was one of Paul Romanuk's Hockey Superstars books - and I got $5 from my parents to get it the next day. Well, I show up the next day and it's no longer there. So clearly, intent on making sure I didn't waste my $5, I promptly bought the next hockey related item I found...
A massive Mike Richter poster.
My parents lost it. Tried to use the example to teach me the idea that you don't spend money just because you can. I'll never forget my interaction with pops that day when he came home from work..."YOU DON'T EVEN LIKE THE RANGERS, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!" Mom got in touch with the good folks at Scholastic and got my money back for returning the poster. lol ethnic parents. That was my version of Le Chandail De Hockey.
