The fact that those cheating scumbags known as the Flyers haven't won a Cup in like 100 years is all the proof we need that karma does exist.

This definitely seems like part of the motivation. He's either locked up in Nashville, where trading him would be a PR disaster barring something like Carter or Nash in Columbus, or they get him.

Surely not a cap hit but still. If Nashville has to pass because they can't afford to shell out $26 mill for a single yearly salary, it'll be a great piece of financial engineering that would certainly piss me off if it weren't my team.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

When they were recruiting Suter to re-sign they at least hinted at potentially being a cap team. Could easily have been bull****, but I guess we'll find out because if that's the case it should be pretty easy to come up with the money.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

Philadelphia Daily News

According to Kypreos, the Flyers have structured the deal in a way that it may be impossible for Nashville to match. The breakdown would be as follows:

2012-13 (age 27): $1 million salary + $13 million signing bonus (league maximum $14M)
2013-14 (28): $1 million salary + $13 million signing bonus (league maximum $14M)
2014-15 (29): $1 million salary + $13 million signing bonus (league maximum $14M)
2015-16 (30): $1 million salary + $13 million signing bonus (league maximum $14M)
2016-17 (31): $4 million salary + $8 million signing bonus (total $12 million)
2017-18 (32): $4 million salary + $8 million signing bonus (total $12 million)
2018-19 (33): $6 million salary
2019-20 (34): $6 million salary
2020-21 (35): $6 million salary
2021-22 (36): $6 million salary
2022-23 (37): $3 million salary
2023-24 (38): $1 million salary
2024-25 (39): $1 million salary
2025-26 (40): $1 million salary
TOTAL: $110 million

Since signing bonuses are usually paid out in a lump sum on July 1 before the season of play, the would mean the Predators would be required to pay Weber $27 million in the next 347 days just to match. To put that in perspective, 16.5 percent of Nashville's entire franchise net worth ($163M as valuated by Forbes Magazine in 2011) would be paid out in less than a calendar year by the small-market team.

For the Flyers, if Weber's offer is matched by Nashville, they will not be penalized in any way.

A source told the Daily News that Weber spent time in Philadelphia last week meeting with the Flyers' brass, though that also has not been confirmed by the team. This would not be tampering, since Weber was not under contract with any team.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

This reminds me - the Flames almost landed Teemu Selanne in 1992 before he came over to Winnipeg. The Jets matched Calgary's $2.7 mil offer sheet.

Can you imagine Selanne on those early 90's Flames teams, that still had Fleury, Nieuwendyk, MacInnis and Roberts, amongst others? Not bad.

I think the best part is that Holmgren sucks so much as a GM that if the cap hit was $21,780 lower he could have gotten away with just giving up 2 firsts, a second and a third instead of the 4 firsts

not true, its 4 firsts either way because its long and cap gets treated as 1/5 of value

The Preds were planning/expecting to pay Suter and Weber 10+ mill this year anyway in cash if they got them on long term contracts. So surely they can afford to give Weber 25mill in the next full calendar year

Common sense says the cap hit will not be that low because of a) the $26M thing, and b) the Preds will snap-match a $6.8M contract.

This is what they say, but there hasn't been much commitment to spend towards the upper limit outside of what they say they were going to do. There's a possibility this was all smoke and mirrors, we'll see.

Thanks 72o. You are a class act.

Pronger & Weber gonna be the best defense core since Niedermayer & Stevens. And they won... 3 RANGZ?

He will come back from the dead.

And if Suter is worth $98M/13y, then Weber $100M/14y is a no brainer. He's probably worth $150/13y honestly if that's what Suter got. Come on Burke make the offer.
