Oh, and Weber too obviously. Enjoy the next 14 years in Nashville.

Can't wait to see the team that Holmgren sticks Weber on in 3 years!

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

i really think there's a good chance they don't match. $26m in salary on a $7m cap hit is like death for Nashville.

only think thing is they might be forced bc the compensation blows.

this is a super interesting situation, i think they'll prob match, but talk about rock & a hard place. then if they have to ship some other guys out to make the money work, and Weber is stuck there with Rinne and no one else? yikes. could be an awkward dressing room.

and speaking of awkward rooms, the next time Snider is face to face with whoever own da Preds during CBA talks... (maybe they'll just send their representatives or something)

And yeah there's no way Nashville doesn't match this.
From what i understand in the past, when it comes to offer sheets, the years on the contract are capped when taking compensation into account. It is capped at like 5 or 6, so you take the total contract money (100mill) and divide it by the cap number of years (which i think is 5) and that is the cap hit you work with when looking at compensation. So the cap hit here would be 20mill meaning 4 1sts.

No way the Preds don't match though, they are much better off matching any deal, then trading Weber next year to multiple bidders than taking 4 late 1sts

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

We're back...2 hours for 3 stitches, lol wtf

Long story short, my brother has the pain tolerance of a dead horse (I was the ***** in the family, ldo from my emo posts itt), and he was angry they didn't let him finish the game. Clipped from behind as he was cutting to the net, effectively knocked out the bottom half of his front two teeth and sliced his lip open.

Now you know he's related to me because he's always ready for a photo op; this was taken by his teammate after the game was over:

Spoiler:

And then after we cleaned up the blood a little more, this is a better pic taken in the waiting room of what happened to his teeth, albeit still poor quality (lol Blackberry):

Spoiler:

He seems rather calm about the whole thing...personally, I'd be losing my ****.

Note, they're in spoiler tags because I'm not sure if he's cool with me sharing these photos to effective randoms as far as he's concerned, so I'd appreciate it if you guys didn't reuse these for memes or whatever, even if it's just itt. Thanks boys.

Good taste in sweaters.

I just woke up sensing something wrong in the world. Lo and behold, Weber is off the market. Tough spot to be in for Nashville. I think they let him go and start rebuilding.

As for my Wings, I'd like to think this all but locks up Semin and Doan, the Wings forget about defense for a year or two. But I don't see that happening either. We could be a cap floor team this year

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

what is nashville's internal cap? If they are a spend to the cap team they have to match. top 5 dmen make that money.

If you are Philly, you get cap relief from Pronger's contract when you replace him with weber. so they don't lose much cap space the first 5 years. and at that point they aren't tied up cap wise. If they are a playoff team the next 4 years, those picks are 15th or later, and they are young anyway. But it makes the LSchenn trade that much worse.

but 14 years? wtf, that's just crazy. there really does need to be a max contract length. 5-7 years.

San Jose apparently lost $15m last year?

Nashville are possibly facing paying one player $26m next year?

do you guys realize it isn't about the $7m cap hit, or even the 14 years maybe (which are also totally ridiculous)? it's about Nashville possibly locking themselves into paying Shea Weber $26m to play hockey next year. read that sentence again. do it one more time now. thanks.

like even if their internal cap is $50m, they're paying at least $69m in salaries. can Nashville do that, even for 1 year? would they do that?

and yeah, great of Snider to do this with the CBA negotiations going on and stuff, can't wait for owners to get even more hardline now... (as well as in-fight and not agree on [censored] themselves)

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

Sj lost 15M?

And the Kings lost 10's of millions of dollars in the years preceding the lockout.
But the parent company of the Kings made multiple BILLIONS because they used the Kings as an entrance into the LA market and cornerstone of the Staples center and surrounding areas? NOT RELEVANT!!!!!

please. sports financials are as bull**** as movie financials.

not as such (hyperbole in terminology by me), but if you're allowed to throw in a $20m signing bonus into an offer sheet, then basically yes. it's not a poison pill, but it really screws Nashville given they can't match & trade.

but i suspect this all could change by next season.

People saying 'herp derp predz will match at 7.14M' are going to be surprised when the cap hit is really 8.2M or something.

Hrm. Dictionary definition of "upwards of" is "more than" according to this, which surprises me tbh because most of the time I see it used is to establish an upper limit, like here ("Flashback malware netted upwards of $10,000 a day"..."Symantec said on Tuesday the Flashback malware that attacked Apple Mac computers could have netted its authors up to $10,000 a day.") or here ("Maybach lost upwards of $500k on each vehicle sold"..."CAR reports Daimler lost somewhere around $500,000 on each and every one of them.") or here ("Did Jerome Simpson cost himself upwards of $5M a year this offseason?"..."That's why the Bengals tried to re-sign him, and why one team thought he would have made $5 million a year if he had not been arrested last fall.").

Apparently that phrase is misused extremely commonly, wouldn't be surprised if Dreger is doing the same. So maybe seaweiss will be surprised when the cap hit is really 6.8m?

that's the thing, you have to look into the peripherals. arena deals and such. No idea what the SJ situation is.
I do think Nashville has a sweet stadium deal but limited revenue. iirc they have worked with an internal cap.

we do have to see what the actual offer is. Remember way back when when Carolina offered Federov the contract with the $25M bonus for winning the Cup? and then they had to pay it.
But putting up the money next year then amortizing it over the contract really shouldn't be a problem for a financially stable team.

I can just see the next CBA meeting...

Owners: We need shorter contracts and a lower cap!

Donald Fehr: lol.

Owners: We can't afford the current landscape!

Fehr: lol

Nashville is a great place.

The way the team is run must really be horrible to drive players out of town.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

Preds fans on the blogs confirmed too nervous to even get pissed. As a Flyers fan I'm obviously hoping they sit on their hands and settle for 4 of our first rounders over the years, but I think the odds are against it. A matched offer sheet is all that stands between Poile and the pitchfork armed mob imo

At least he'll never be a penguin or ranger

it's not a $20M signing bonus. Is it a lot of money to swallow? Yeah, but what else are the Preds going to spend it on? Signing bonuses only matter if the franchise literally doesn't have the cash to spend, otherwise it doesn't matter when in the year it gets paid. The only exception is right now - signing bonuses ensure a player gets paid when the lockout happens. That one will hurt the Predators, but this '$26M in a calendar year' stuff has to go.
