We had damn near 20 mil in capspace this year and 40 for next year. There is no way we hit our cap this year.

**** it. Overpay the kid and lock him up for a couple years. Might earn some loyalty out of him come next negotiation when we're gonna need everyone to take a small pay cut. We'll have Tyler Bunz in a few years anyways, and there is no way in **** I'm watching another 40 games of Khabibulin this year.

Dubnyk getting as much as Rask next season.

Spoiler:

I was also 100% convinced that Burke was going to Offersheet Dubnyk. It would have been such a Burke move. Get payback for the Penner offersheet, somewhat shore up his AHL goalie situation, and reduce the price of Luongo by showing Gillis he has options.

For all we know that might be why Dubnyk got so much. Maybe Burke offered him an offersheet that he ended up not signing, but proved to the Oilers how much he was "worth".

Dubnyk was 47 GP, GAA of 2.67 and SV% of .914 on the 2nd Worst team in the league.

Rask was 23 GP, GAA of 2.05 and SV% of .929 on one of the best teams in the league.

Chara alone could be responsible for half that difference, let alone the AHL defenders the Oilers had last year.

That said, goalie stats are so much more team based than goalie based, can't base much on them.

I believe Rask is the better goalie, but Dubnyk's no slouch.

I don't think Dubnyk is terrible or anything, but his agent did quite well imo!

As for the Rask comparison, I think he's a definitive cut above Dubnyk and I'd be shocked if there was much disagreement there. Though the salary thing being equal might be immaterial because unless Rask completely bombs out this season, he's in for a nice pay raise. And I'm not just going by this past season but previous years as well. 2009-2010, Rask had unreal numbers with the likes of lol Wideman logging 23 1/2 mins a game right behind Chara. Derek Morris and Matt Hunwick were some of our other d-men that year (Seidenberg acquired at deadline only played 17 games in the regular season).

it's kind of completely immaterial. you can't compare someone who just signed a new deal to someone who will be signing a new one next year.

They're both RFA's who just signed a new deal. Rask's deal is just going to expire a year earlier.

Not sure I like that deal for Perron. He ran hot this year and has that concussion risk.

It'd be even better if they could offload Stajan somehow.

i guess i see why NHL teams nickel and dime players like this in this spot, to make sure they understand that the NHL is not a guarantee, but still, if that weren't a concern a 3 year 4.5M deal would be sick value
I don't think Backlund would've wanted a longer contract though. Broken hand to start the season, never really got healthy and he looked downright lost at times. As a player, I don't think that's the kind of season that makes you think "let's aim for longer term."

It's like Comeau's situation - if you really think you're primed for a bounceback year, why look for anything but short term? Fill the net instead and get paid next summer.

Simmons and Grossmann is super snap call city.

These Bouwmeester rumours picking up steam is making me really queasy.

I will break my laptop if it happens.

Maybe I'm off, but Dubnyk has always been an AHL goalie to me who is only in the NHL due to the Edmonton Oilers being the Edmonton Oilers.

I drank beers with Buwmeester at Melrose on 17 Ave in Calgary, before he was a flame! true story.

I golfed in the group right behind him a few weeks before his draft day. I had no idea who he was, but some random guy in our group had a boner for him the whole day and was trying to catch up so he could chat with him.

The golf was good practice since he ended up as a Flame.

He's undefeated with a perfect 1.000 SV% and 0.00 GAA as Canada's goalie through 3 major international events.

I doubt any other goalies can say that.

Partied with him last night at Pure. Talked to him for a bit, he basically confirmed he was @strombone1 on twitter. Wife was also whining about the Vancouver media. Guess it's hard to blame her for that.

He's playing the main event, said he came 22nd in the Sunday Million last year. Didn't really ask about hockey, he seemed much more comfortable talking poker.

fyp? Jagr has always been about the maney, and that's fine. I'm sure he would have preferred to play in Montreal with his buddies Plekanec and Kaberle, but I'm also sure he wasn't gonna give us a discount.
